Round 3 - 2023 (Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty / In Honor of Karl) - Match 17 of 26
Chi Osse (Advisry), left
“The look is a reinterpretation of a womenswear look Karl made for his first Chanel haute couture collection - SS 1983. When Karl first came to Chanel, people were worried he was going to rewrite the house codes. Karl instead opted to keep the Chanel tradition, changing them “little by little.” He decided to reference the earlier designs of the 20s and 30s, rather than pull from the 50s, which others expected. I wanted to approach this look in the same way, referencing early Chanel to set our look apart, altering it but keeping the tradition present. For this look, we took a belted dress Karl had made and turned it into a mens suit, substituting the main fabric for tweed.” (x)
vs. Yung Miami (Chanel), right
“Lagerfeld’s Chanel—especially his penchant for black and white, with a spritz of pearl beading—informed Brownlee’s debut Met Gala dress. It was designed by Luca Lin of Act N°1, with a high, open, standing tulle bust; a sheer waist-hugging and seam-taped silhouette; and a dramatic cloud of dense black tulle on the train. Pearl cords accentuated the hips. “I had them scallop it a bit more, for more of a nod to the camellia,” said Senofonte. ... “Lagerfeld had such strong attention to detail,” said Brownlee. “I wanted to make sure my look included homages to his approach. And, like him, it needed to be innovative and unique.”” (x)
