It was the sight of red forming over Leon’s face that brought her back from deep inside her head. Dark gems shifted to her own hand, trembling streaks of red. Was the blood her own or his? Her hands shook, the shards of glass hardly registered, the sting dulled by the loud scream inside her head.
“Leon I..” She couldn’t form words, her composure long gone behind a frantic image of a woman who hadn’t seen the one person who she trusted in this world.
She stood now, actual tears forming in her eyes, streaking down her face.Proving that even waterproof mascara had its limits, why had she done that? Why did she react that way? The fact she had moments before was tracing the very scar that resided on his body because of her. Then she added to those scars.
Ada’s body didn’t feel like her own, a stranger in her own skin. She couldn’t explain why the glass had been used to hurt him. Her pulse could be heard in her ears, every damn best of her heart slamming into her eardrums like damned gunfire. It spread like a wildfire to her fingertips. She swallowed trying to erase the fact she could feel it clawing at her throat.
“I didn’t mean..” She managed to choke out her voice dripping in sorrow. How had she managed to hurt the one person she was supposed to fix, this mission was the one that mattered more than all the ones she succeeded in. She was failing, failing herself, failing Leon.
She couldn’t look at him, as she attempted to force the air back into her lungs. Every breath she took didn’t feel like enough air, swallowing her in a pool of regret and pain. She was drowning when she was meant to be the savior.
His words hit hard because she knew she did leave. She rushed out that door with every reason she could find. Just like she always left him, knowing how he felt. She rushed to leave so she could get distance from him when he was being reasonable. “I went to get my things.. I was going to make something easy on your stomach that wasn’t the takeout you seemed..” Why did she do that? Why run an excuse Ada?
What was she thinking? Even didn’t know, that terrified her of herself. For the first time, Ada Wong wasn’t in control of herself. Of her own actions or choices. She hadn’t realized she was so afraid of losing control. She closed her eyes, trying to regain everything.
The killing blow, Leon saying she was just like everyone else, the way he spiraled. She choked out a sob, followed with an ungraceful snort showing she was losing control herself. “No, I am here.. I am here to help you fight for yourself.. I just.” She stumbled over her words, Ada wasn’t the calm woman she normally was.
“Anger? I’m not some barbarian Leon.. it was.” She trailed off, was there any point in explaining it? Would he even hear her words with how far gone he was? She knew how he saw her, the woman who used him time and time again. The woman who had no heart. She couldn’t let him see exactly how broken she truly was behind the mask, behind the woman he knew. Yet, somehow she knew he already knew that. Right? The only explanation for why he clung to her all those years.
She parted her lips watching his frantic attempt to search the room, finding her own hand coming up flat palmed with blood dripping as if to make him keep distance. She could see the violence forming in his eyes. Her other hand cautiously moved to the knife strap on her thigh, not grabbing the knife but preparing for if he lashed out. If he came for her, she had a layer of defense. She wouldn’t hurt him, not again anyway.
“Leon, listen to me, I didn’t mean to. I just..there are things you don’t know. Don’t understand.” She attempted to explain, wait? What was she even going to tell him. Definitely not the real reason she had attacked him, when seconds before her touch had been almost intimate.
She took a step back as if she was afraid of him, Ada Wong never feared anyone. She had been the aggressor why the hell was she backing away with her blood covered hand up as if trying to make him back down.
Then her free hand’s fingers curled around the handle of the knife defenses high. Ada knew that much like herself he was a survivor, out of his mind with grief and depression. Not to mention how intoxicated he was, his judgment was gone. A slow deep breath came from the woman, but her eyes never left his movements.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have hit you. That’s not what I, I don’t know what happened. I’m not angry.. I can’t tell you why.” More secrets in their extremely toxic on and off situationship that she made more complicated than it ever had to be. “Let’s just calm down.” Wrong words she closed her eyes knowing better, knowing he was intoxicated. Seemed neither of them was thinking straight right now.
