It wasn’t often Armin felt there was someone around as interested in his studies as he was. Opening up entirely about his observations was a simple pleasure that he seldom indulged in. Eren grew tired of abstract conversation too easily, and it wasn’t as if he felt the need to roam around and locate any ear that was willing to listen. More often than not, the quiet breathing of a flickering candle was more than enough company for him as he studied.
When he learned of Hanji’s research, the prospect of meeting someone with a mind as inquiring as his own had seemed thrilling. And at first, it was. The thoughts and ideas contained in her lectures were new and exciting. But—
After about two hours of it, focus was running short. He suppressed a yawn for the sake of politeness, cupping his chin in his hand as he leaned on the table. She gestured emphatically at her notes, readjusting her glasses. Everyone else had gone to bed long ago, the hour now uncertain.
"So by the fourth hour of our testing, I decided to take it upon myself to—"
Gently, he interjected. “M-miss Hanji? I’m sorry, but—”
"Hold on, a moment. I haven’t even told you the best part!" She enthused, leaning forward in her chair.
"Um…" Had he lacked social graces, he would have wrenched out of this extended lecture quite some time ago. "Okay,"
As for the ‘best part,’ that would remain a mystery.
"Miss Hanji—?" The question derailed as he sprang forward from his seat. The squad leader had nearly fallen out of her chair, eyes closed in a sudden slumber. He caught her, righting her in her seat.
"Did you really just…talk yourself to sleep?"
A soft snoring was his only reply.
