Levi is too cold to ever love someone so he doesn't care about you.
She’d never admit her feelings for him. It was unprofessional, and would stand in the way of the mission. But though she tried day after day, they wouldn’t ebb away, and one day she feared they might come bubbling out in a moment of weakness.
The words stung for a second, a pain deeper than she would have expected. A brief moment where it flashed as a possibility in her mind: the Captain looking at her with emotionless eyes and walking away without so much as a single word. A fear she shouldn’t have in face of much more fearsome creatures and terrifying ideas, but it wasn’t a dull, aching fear that lurked in the back of her head like the others. It only came occasionally in waves of plummeting stomachs and a pain in her chest.
But then it faded.
He was cold and distant when he needed to be. To show emotion when others were relying on you for orders was to let personal feelings obstruct the necessary. But she’d seen him for who he truly was in moments of adversity, placing aside selfish tendencies to grasp the bloodied hand of a comrade whose life has quickly fading from his eyes. The hollow look in his eyes as he clasped still after the man had departed from this cruel world to carry on somewhere better.
[ did he hear me until the very end? ]
[ yes. i think he did. ]
— “The captain has is own way of showing he cares about people, it’s just hard to see sometimes. He cares about me just like he cares about the rest of his squad, and we share a bond deeper than what you can see on the surface. We all do.”
That was enough.
Hopefully it would remain so.
