    Trying to fool him had been futile. “I…I don’t think I could, Eren. Besides, Mikasa would never approve.”

   "What Mikasa thinks doesn't matter... You said you would do it and you will."

"Eren!!" His voice echoed through the room, footsteps pounding as he ran toward his friend. Armin launched himself forward and into Eren's arms, grabbing him into a tight embrace. "Happy birthday!" Armin new it wasn't the same for his friend anymore. Not without his mother. But he tried his best to keep the mood light. "I got Sasha to steal a little extra sweet bread from the kitchen for us to celebrate!"

   ”Armin!” he cried out in surprise, feeling his friend’s arms tighten around his form. Birthday… As much as it wasn’t the same anymore, Eren remembered, yet expecting nothing. No celebration, no gifts. However, Mikasa and Armin always proved him wrong, they too remembered each time, but days before he considered the possibility that the problems they dealt with daily could make them forget, which he was ready to understand.

   He hugged him back instinctively and a smile formed upon his face. “Hah,” he laughed. “Thank you. I like that bread, but you didn’t need to get Sasha to steal food again.”

    He sighed, looking down at his shoes as if it would make the half-hearted lie more convincing. “…no I don’t.”
