WHEN YOUR ART IDOL FOLLOWS YOU 😱
Something for @aeridanus. Getting back to sketching was in the end a challenge.. It is still hard to do without feeling guilt and pain.. but thank you for helping me when I was in that horrible state, at least now I can keep on trying and hoping that the wounds will heal and the pain will go away eventually with time…
In response to this post, @aeridanus said: They look great, but to be honest - if these take you so long, maybe you should work on your painting techniques before tackling an entire piece... it'd make everything easier.
I’m definitely right there with you: I think my rookie mistake was getting a little “stuck” at 75% zoom; aside from that, I think the rest of the problem comes from me starting the final art so long after those initial color/technique studies. I’m trying to remind myself to work smarter instead of working harder, but I think I still have some Photoshop tricks and shortcuts to learn.
That’s the problem with coming from traditional media, I’m always trying to fix things manually and I gotta start backing up and telling myself to stop!
Good thing is, though, I have noticed that I tend to speed up after about an hour into a session, but by the time I’m working more steadily, it’s nearly time for me to pass out again. XD I’m telling myself it’s okay because this is probably 2 condensed hours of work on the bird, which means I’m a little bit faster than I used to be when I created this little painting, which is the level of detail they want.
“Must go faster!”

You got me a bit curious :) If you need to, how do you could with the stress of times sketches? I tried them several times, but can't function under pressure when it comes to personal art (non-workplace work included). Apart from that, I noticed you were playing with perspective very nicely - itinerary most subtle and beautiful on the first two. So much knowledge behind those seemingly loose sketches! Oh, and thank you for the little advertising. I try to live up to it!
Autocorrect is the worst haha. I feel for you. And thanks! <3 I’m getting there! hard surface perspective is still the bane of my existence. Organic things are a little more forgiving :’D As far as getting use to such an intense time limit its not so much that I’m having to draw faster though it can feel like it at first. It definitely forced me to develop a more direct set of priorities in how long I should spend iterating on a composition and fixing form construction to maximizing the amount of time I have to go over it after with fewer lines. If you want to try getting back into it a) don’t do it on your personal work and b) start by just timing yourself casually to figure out a starting point and then start limiting yourself to that time, shortening it as you get more comfortable with it. Art schools usually have a figure drawing exercise like that. Same idea really. :) I use to do these in 45 min time slots the last time I’d done them. I still surprise myself when I get a really solid sketch almost completely done in the first 15 mins and still have a whole 15 left to make it pop. Besides $30 for 30 is extremely catchy. ;) The hardest part is that each time I do one my brain wants me to up the game which can make it hard to remind myself sometimes that these are SKETCHES. The goal is better work, not more polished work. I don’t do timed sketches on personal stuff ever, just on commissions! But the byproduct is that it’s definitely made my overall workflow much faster than it was back in February.

You are who I look up to so much when it comes to dynamic poses and slightly exaggerated anatomy. ;_; Those sketches are so, so beautiful.
;A; AAA thanks! Doing these timed sketches again is making me a lot faster and more efficient. Learned a TON of new perspective and things in that area are starting to really click in my head now. Always enjoying your worldbuilding posts and species explorations! Hope you’re doing well and glad you had a good time out in Arizona. :D
In response to this post, aeridanus asked:
Thank you a lot for this wonderfully written and illustrated snippet. :) Are you doing these "on-demand" for asks or do you have many of these sketches readily available? (Asking so dumbly because they look calmly done and refined!)
This was a result of me having a smidgen of “free time” (meaning, staying with family out of state with a sketchbook) and wanting to answer a very visual ask with some sketches. When I first started this blog, I had ample time to sketch out personal work, and I’m lamenting that I can no longer do that. Though if I DO have a fitting sketch that already exists, I’m definitely going to throw that on the scanner to spice up my otherwise dry text post answers. :D
I’m now reminded of how much I want to take a month off from commissions/client work to spend some precious 4 hours a day devoted to worldbuilding/sketches. 2017, make it happen! *weeps*

Congratulations, you deserve it! :)
d’aww, thanks. :>

Updated the old map bc I didn’t like it, so I made...
If you want, I can take a closer look at your two maps tonight and help you find things to tweak? :) Especially concerning the plate movement
That would be really awesome if you have the time! I do have a tectonic map, but I don’t know how accurate it is :V
I was just about to ask you what to start with once tectonics and basic landmass in done since there are so many things I get confused!
(see, very inspired xD)
