she didn’t want to be at the ball anymore, surprisingly, she was ready to be alone with amycus and as soon as she found him she let him know and they had disapparated to his place of course because her current living situation didn’t afford a ton of privacy. she broke off from him, still furious over what silas had done and doing her best not to show just how furious. “i cannot believe silas --- “ she took a moment, taking a deep breath and looking at him.

“wait, you’re engaged?” he scoffed, but he was indeed happy for his friend, but first he needed to be indignant. “could have given me a heads up, mate.”

so much had changed in the last weeks and madeline felt nothing but confident, in her decisions and her future. and amycus was a big part of that but she hated him being away as much as it seemed he had been. she wasn’t asking a lot of questions, partly because she wasn’t sure she wanted to know the details right now. but one thing she did want was to feel more confident in her ability to take care of herself, knowing amycus would not always be right there with a left hook. when she found him in the common room that morning she knew what she wanted to ask. “hey, do you think you could teach me some more martial magic? i’m not in dueling club or anything, i don’t have the time but i’d like to improve my skills and who better to ask than you?”

“where have you been?” she hadn’t seen amycus for a little while and she knew she’d been busy planning the new years party and everything but she hadn’t been avoiding him. maybe he had changed his mind since christmas, maybe she was too much trouble and he didn’t want to be part of it. her mind had raced through so many possibilities but he’d been mia for days. she was worried about him, worried he got hurt on new years and she just didn’t know. worried something had happened with his parents, or something to do with the mark on his arm. she felt sick when finally, finally he walked through the common room doors.

bas was thrilled to be away from his responsibilities, even if it was just for a day or two, with his best mate. he’d been so busy with alecto, and amycus with madeline, that they’d had less time to do something fun and foolish. but now it was time and bas lifted the sword he’d pulled off amycus’s bedroom wall two minutes after hanging it there. “perhaps we should take this duel outside?” he grinned, adrenaline flowing, happy to be just some dumb kid again for a little bit.

she stood up on her tiptoes, and still barely reached his face, stormy eyes wide with innocence. “so, you haven’t told me what you want for christmas --”
