Quick sketch

This is to lighten the mood from yesterday's dark (literally and figuratively) illustration

Hopefully I made them all look more or less their age and as if they are parents and children (genetics huh )))))) )

At first I imagined that Anatoliy's father was elderly and sick etc but then I realised that Anatoliy is in his 20s so that would make for a very large age gap between them (and basically all fairly tales ever if you think about it, the protagonists are always very young and their parents very old... you never see the main character in a fairy tales being in his 40s... or maybe "elderly parents" means 40s 50s... which... I'm not going to unpack that). But then I was like. No, I'm going to incorporate that into canon actually. ))))))))

And so I decided that Afanasiy was already in his mid 30s when he got married (and like a year or so afterwards Sveta was born). Sveta being 12 years older than her brother is why Anatoliy was such a young uncle (by the time Sveta was in her 20s he was just a teen).

However they are rather than exception than the rule in-universe, as most would get married and have children in their 20s. The age of 20 is the legal adult age in their country (therefore an 18 year old is still considered a teen). Anatoliy himself is also an exception at the other end, having married Ingrid at exactly 20 (she's the same age as him), but I imagine they knew eachother since they were teens.

And in this sketch there's all 5 of them. The parents at an older age (even though in canon the mom died aged about 46; it's for illustration purposes), and the three siblings are drawn at slightly older ages than in the first chapters of the novel.

I just found this sketch I drew in July

I wanted to draw the siblings together with their parents so as to illustrate how they are related (hopefully I drew them to look related enough 🤭)

Grigoriy vs Afanasiy

Grigoriy is the younger sibling here

I imagine their relationship to be kind of complicated... especially when you take into consideration the things Grigoriy does as soon as his brother is dead

Also in the first picture Afanasiy is kinda chubby so as to further emphasise the effect his illness had on him. I imagine it was some sort of digestive system disease, like ulcer or whatever. Stomach cancer (or a type of cancer, since they acted like it was completely incurable)
