Four years. We're closing on four years and finally buying a house together. Neither of us can contain the joy of filling a home our own. From beginning to end, this one will be only ours. My hands shake so bad I can't even get the key in the doorknob but luckily I have Ashton by my side to help. Joy gets the best of me as tears begin to fall as I walk into the empty living room.
We take a quick walk around the house measuring things here and there for furniture shopping that afternoon. My cheeks hurt from all the smiling. I hear a loud honking outside as I walk down the stairs and Ashton grabs my hand before I can investigate.
“Love, I've been thinking a lot these last few days. Do you remember the first time you kissed me?”
“Of course, it was right before you left for tour.”
I'm still a little embarrassed at how long it took me to kiss him. We spent the days before he left for tour together. From morning to night, we ate, slept, and dreamed with one another but never kissed until minutes before he stepped onto the tour bus. Always the procrastinator, I waited until the final minute. I couldn't imagine waiting the months until he came back to kiss him so I dove in the second we were left alone. I later learned that Michael caught our kiss but kept quiet, letting it come out in due time.
“Yeah.” Ashton gives me a huge smile and the smallest nod. Bringing me close to him he wraps his arms around my waist. He kisses me gently as we sway around the living room while he hums a song. “This is our first dance in this house.” Ashton notes and I can’t help but roll my eyes a little.
There's a second honk and he starts walking to the door, taking me along with him. He opens the door and there's a tour bus parked outside the house. My heart sinks at the sight of it. Guilt fills my stomach, I know he has some hand in it, and I’ve got him nothing to give in return.
“Ash… We agreed, no anniversary gifts this year because of the house. I didn't get you--”
“Shhh just come along.” He says taking my hand and walking me down the front path.
“I just wanted a quick trip down memory lane to celebrate. Here’s the first one, this is where we kissed for the first time, just before I walked onto our tour bus for three months.” Ashton reminds me as we stand by the door. He kisses the top of my head before continuing inside.
The tour bus is nearly identical to the one I first visited. It's been years but the memories flood back like it was yesterday. Ten days I spent on the road with them. Right before they headed back to LA. It was exhausting but well worth it to finish the last leg of their tour.
“This is where I laid, texting you at all hours of the night, trying to convince you to visit.” Ashton says pulling back the curtains to one of the bunks. The walls are covered in the pictures I’d send him. Silly pictures of me at work, my coffee mugs, and funny pictures of me and my silly faces. They were my attempts to make him feel close on the hard days. I can't remember who first had the idea to print them first but it's been our tradition ever since; they become a personal scrapbook of tours.
“This is where you stayed when I finally convinced you to visit, ‘as a friend’” Ashton gives me a playful confused look as he shakes his head and pulls back the curtain to my bunk; it’s similarly decorated with the pictures of Ashton from around the world. I'd been so afraid in those early days. His life moved so fast compared to my own but he took time every day to send me a picture.
“This is where we had sex for the first time.” He jokes pointing a thumb towards the tour bus couches.
“Ashton!” I say feeling my cheeks burn hot flush as I remember the night we were finally left alone on the tour bus. Everything got away from us when we finally got to make out. I know from the stories that we weren't the only ones to defile the tour bus couch but it's far from my proudest moment. He adds, “That's also where I first said I love you.”
“And this is where I was standing when you first said it back.” He says leaning by the makeshift kitchen in the bus. I feel tears stinging in my eyes as I remember that morning. I woke up in Colorado, the tour bus freezing, and Ashton handed me a cup of, just the way I like it, and his favorite hoodie. I couldn't have held it in if I wanted to. I knew immediately, I was irreversibly and irrevocably in love with Ashton Irwin.
“This is where we told everyone we were dating.” He says as we step out of the tour bus. I don't know why but I asked him to avoid telling anyone so we could start dating without questions. Everyone knew, of course, but it made me feel a little better to have it be our little secret.
I'm surprised to see Calum outside as Ashton leads me back up the steps to the front porch with the swing. It's what ultimately sold me on the house, having somewhere to sit at the end of the day to just rest together.
“What's this?” I ask.
“This is where I ask you to be my wife. This is where we build a family. It's where we're going to celebrate Christmas, birthdays, and our engagement. If you want to.” Ashton says as he takes a box from Calum. He gets down on one knee, “Y/N, do you want to keep making memories with me for the rest of our lives?”
“Of course.” I answer, choking back tears.
“Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” I say pulling him to his feet. My legs shaking like jelly. The excitement coursing through my veins making my legs feel. It's like I can feel the same excitement I felt the first time I kissed him. My heart beating like a drum in my chest as I get to kiss him again.
“I love you.” Ashton says pulling away.
“I love you, too” I respond barely noticing the tears running down my cheeks. I hear Calum whooping.
“Told you, mate. Michael Scott knew what he was doing.” Calum says as he hugs his best friend, clapping Ashton on the back.
“Calum, you sack of shit, you lifted my proposal off of The Office?!” I finally realize why it all seemed familiar. I can't even be genuinely angry as Calum comes up to me and hugs me.
“Hey, it's fucking cute. Tell me you didn't cry when Michael did it for Holly?” Calum says raising his eyebrows at me. I can't help but hug him again. My cheeks tired from smiling the entire day but the joy in my heart wouldn't allow me to keep a straight face.
“We gotta get a picture!” Calum shouts.
I can only hope my mascara isn't running down my face as Calum perches on the porch banister and takes the first picture of Ashton and me in our new house. I can't wait to frame it. The first memory in our new house. Marking forever the place where we got engaged.
