Valerie didn’t even think about it. She’d been hunched underneath the lunch table as the shooter walked almost casually across the room, spraying bullets in the direction of any movement he saw. It wasn’t until she saw Meredith, clearly in his path, cowering beside the vending machine, that Val herself moved. She pushed herself across the floor, trying to be quiet. She might not even make it over. With a shaky breath, she slid, moving hastily in front of the other girl. The blood was soaking through her sweatshirt from her path on the floor, and she swiped her finger across, smearing the blood onto Meredith’s face. It was a long shot. “Play dead,” she said in a low tone, shoving her so that she lay down. “Don’t.. breathe.” The shooter came toward them, noticing Valerie first. She’d never imagined what it would feel like to be shot. But now, she knew. She fell backward, prone across Meredith’s unmoving form. The shooter walked past them both and down the hallway, out of sight.
continued from here
She stared at the door for a long time. Meredith already knew she was here, she’d rung the buzzer to let her in. Just standing here was stupid, it wasn’t accomplishing anything, and the longer she waited, the more awkward it was going to be with her ex. Valerie sighed, finally knocking at the familiar door. She wasn’t looking forward to looking the other girl in the face, not after breaking her heart. The guilt ate at her every day. Val never thought she’d be the one to cheat on somebody. There was a first time for everything.

“ what have i told you about drunk texting your ex ?? “ the girl sighed heavily, shaking her head at the other, “ she isn’t coming back, you know that. she was never good enough for you anyways. you need to find someone who actually loves you, not just loves the concept of you. you DESERVE that. “
