METROPOLARITY X APIARY MAGAZINE
APIARY 8: Submissions are Open!
APIARY is back in action and our submissions are open! Our theme? Soft Targets. Read on for more!
SOFT TARGET: a person or thing that is relatively unprotected or vulnerable, especially to military or terrorist attack. The terms "soft target" and "hard target" are flexible in nature, and the distinction between the two is not always clear.
We want to talk about vulnerability and violence. About joy and openness in an age of permanent warfare. About strategy and survival in our contested city. About the softness, the wild and monstrous and tender in all of us that was banished to the woods and grew foot-long acrylic fangs. Call up your contradictions and dreams, your weaponized wantings. Show us a map that leads to the source of our nightmares: underneath our clothes, roofs, nations; behind our screens, passports, safe words.
For this issue, APIARY is collaborating with Philadephia’s own Metropolarity, a DIY sci-fi collective of poor, working class & low income trans & queer survivors, mothers, professionals, non-academics, glorious, amorphous border-walking space-dreaming city folk of the African/Caribbean/mestiza/European diasporas. They believe that those without power must take advantage and control of all accessible media outlets. They choose science fiction as their prism to manifest world-paradigms necessary for their survival. Throughout the submissions period for APIARY 8, Metropolarity will work with us to facilitate a series of special events, workshops, and online prompts to help you hone in on the SOFT TARGETS theme. Stay tuned.

Apiary Mag is Philly’s free, volunteer-run print lit publication and supporters of ours. People have been asking about when we might be putting out our next zine. We’ve been so busy trying to stay with our rent paid these past several months (years?) that it’s been rough getting shit together. BUT THIS IS WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON. We’ll be reviewing submissions jointly with the Apiary, and doing a handful of writing workshops and reading events leading up to the submission deadline. Stay tuned to Apiary’s site for the news, since it seems like all of us can barely keep up on the social lately::::::
