Somali and African troops have captured a new town from Shebab Islamists during a major offensive, the army said Thursday, days after US air strikes targeted the extremists' leader. Troops on Wednesday seized the town of Jalalaqsi, some 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Mogadishu, and the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab fled without a fight, the 22,000-strong African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said in a statement. "Al-Shebab militants did not mount any serious battle and fled the town as Somali army and AMISOM forces entered," AMISOM said. Source: AFP
A UN peacekeeping force for Central African Republic will begin deploying in two months, with some 2,500 troops joining African and French forces, UN and French officials said Wednesday. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Morocco have agreed to contribute three battalions to the new UN force, said France's UN Ambassador Gerard Araud. The first contingents will begin arriving around September 15 and will beef up the 6,000 African troops serving in the African Union's MISCA force. The head of UN peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous, said the new UN force will work to strengthen security at a "significantly superior" level than the current MISCA operation. Source: AFP
N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chad's President Idriss Deby said its border with Central African Republic had been closed pending an end to intercommunal violence there that has killed thousands and forced nearly one million people to flee their homes. Thousands of French and African troops have failed to stop the waves of killings that erupted after the predominantly Muslim Seleka rebel movement seized power in the majority-Christian former French colony in March 2013. \"Barring that precise case, no one is authorized to cross this border until the crisis in Central African Republic is resolved,\" he said. Chad, previously at the heart of African efforts to stabilize the neighboring country, withdrew its forces from Central African Republic last month. Source: Reuters
