It’s #BlackHistoryMonth and I believe that it is important to tailor my lesson plans to connect my students to their origins. They all hail from many parts of the diaspora and as I was pulling out books to read for my next reading lesson, I was amazed at how many books had either Black characters, focused on specific regions of the diaspora, or that taught lessons about social justice. As I pulled these books, I recalled the amount of books with Black characters that existed when I was little and I could not only remember them by heart, but I could count them on my hand. Needless to say, our children are extremely blessed today. Their knowledge of Black history will expand past the slavery and the Civil Rights Movement.
