Eva Ayllón

Eva Ayllón was born in 1956 in Lima, Peru. Ayllón is sometimes called the "Queen of Afro-Peruvian Soul", and "Peru's Tina Turner". She has had a remarkable five-decade musical career and has released more than 30 albums. Allyón's achievements include 4 platinum records, a sold out Carnegie Hall performance, and a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The past few days, I’ve been listening on repeat  Daniel Haaksman’s remix of Me Gritaron Negra on Soundcloud. If I remember well, the first time that I watched the original performance on youtube, was around 2016 during Tent City, Black Lives Matter TO’s occupation of the police headquarters.  It gave me goose bumps. It is strange to hear your story, in another language, in a production that is about 40 years old, she wasn't even seven, I remember being 5. However this song, is more than that, and the reclamation of the self is loud, assertive, and healing.

Dengue Dengue Dengue - Zenit & Nadir (Enchufada)

Dengue Dengue Dengue continue expanding their carefully created aesthetic on their new album ‘Zenit & Nadir’ by diving into the deep and rich musical history of Afro-Peruvian music, already hinted in the first single ‘Ágni’, which is the inversion of the traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythm Ingá. The ongoing exploration of the vast and rich musical heritage of the descendants of the former African slaves in Peru has become the main focus of their new album. Their interest in Afro-Peruvian music has led them to meet and record extensively with several members of the Ballumbrosio family, a renowned musical dynasty in Peru that has kept Afro-Peruvian musical traditions alive, masters of rhythms like landó, festejo and crioullo music, with traditional dances and instruments such as the iconic quijada - a rattling percussive instrument made out of a donkey’s jawbone. The introduction of live recordings with the Ballumbrosio brothers has given a whole new dimension to their always-expanding sound, and they feature extensively all throughout the album. As they were such an integral part of the recording process it made perfect sense that they would contribute to expand Dengue Dengue Dengue’s memorable audiovisual performance as well, and have began playing live shows together this year. The marriage between the traditional and organic percussion of the Ballumbrosios with DDD’s hypnotic electronic production has created a whole new chapter for the band.

Cecilia Tait

Cecilia Tait was born in 1962 in Lima, Peru. At the 1988 Olympics, Tait was captain of the Peruvian women’s volleyball team, which beat other, more favored teams to win a silver medal. She has won both the Women in Sport Trophy and the Pierre de Coubertin medal from the International Olympic Committee, and in 2005, she was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. In 2000, Tait was elected to Peru’s Congress.

Susana Baca

Susana Baca was born on May 24, 1944 in Chorrillos, Peru. Baca, both a researcher and a performer, spearheaded a revival of Afro-Peruvian music. She achieved international fame in the 1990s, and has since released multiple albums and toured the United States. Baca has garnered a reputation as an oustanding vocal talent. In 2011, she was named Peru’s Minister of Culture, becoming the first black person in Peru’s history to hold a cabinet post.
