The Battle Between Me and Secular Music

Secular Music... Wow. Where do I start? Well first of all you might be wondering what exactly IS 'secular music'? Secular music is described as any type of music that does not edify God in any way, shape or form. It is non-religious music. It could come from the sweetest sounding artist but if it isn't about God or Christianity then it shouldn't be listened to in all honesty. When I first heard about this I refused to believe that God would disallow us from listening to normal artists who do not even dare glorify the devil or promote drugs, sex and alcohol. But I soon found out that even if they aren't openly proclaiming negative things then even so.. if it isn't in tune with my faith then I mustn't listen to it.

It hurt because back in the day I WAS A DEVOUT J. COLE FAN!!! Ask any of my friends. If you'd ask me about his songs, his lyrics, I knew them ALL. I thought his lyrics were absolutely mind-blowing the way he gets across his stories with such lyrical skill astounded me and I was truly a fan of his music. Then I came to uni... And that all changed. I met like-minded Christians such as myself who enjoyed listening to Kanye West, Rihanna, Jay-Z etc. And were all going through the same exact hardships are was going through when coming to terms with the issue of secular music. Because the thing is.. it sounds soo sweet, catchy and every-time you hear that beat you jut wanna get up and start singing those words BUT. That's not the way God intended it for us.

Drake, J. Cole, Kanye West, Lil Wayne these are just a few of the rappers who I used to listen to who I no longer acknowledge. It was VERY hard indeed. But one day I just had to take that step of faith and delete EVERY song on my iPod. Until I was left with only non-secular songs.

You may wonder "Do I regret it?" NO. Why? Because my Salvation is more important to me than a few lyrics on paper. More important than 'Rack city, rack, rack city..." those things, that life-style, those words. Were not meant for us as Christians.

So this is just a piece of my experience that I want to share with any Christians out there who are struggling with the issue of secular music. There are PLENTY of GREAT gospel artists out there who aren't all 'HOLIER THAN THOU' to say the least. Not everyone likes the slow, moving jams.. And to be honest I don't either, it's not expected for us to move from 'Teach me how to dougie' to.. "Lord you are'... 

But what we can do is search. And I've searched and been blessed with many artists from the internet and my friends at uni. Lecrae is one of my favourite artists at the moment, Kirk Franklin, Mali Music and more... The thing is, they are out there. We just have to look and find them. And once you do. You'll NEVER want to go back.
