A young girl bathes herself while her mother does the laundry in a shantytown — a favela — situated on the hills above the wealthy neighbourhood of Ipanema in Rio de Janerio. A while back, I did a story on AfroReggae, a Brazilian organisation whose mission was to reduce the use of drugs and crime in Rio’s favelas through artistic education. The catalyst for its success during its infancy, according to founder José Junior, was the terrible massacre in the Vigário Geral favela in August 1993. The police killed 21 innocent people, some of whom were women and children. AfroReggae, by then, were well known among the community and was able to make a difference by offering people, especially children, real alternatives to a life of crime. People were “œawakened.” The group created a band and organised free workshops to help educate children. The band’s music gained commercial success, and AfroReggae eventually became known globally.
