OKAY the excitement I felt when I saw you're 2 out of 3 books into the Winternight Trilogy!!!! I'm so glad that you liked the books! I adore Arden's writing (and heartily recommend 'The Warm Hands of Ghosts' or her Small Spaces trilogy for a middle grade read) and especially adore the characters in The Winternight Trilogy.

THEO IT'S ALL THANKS TO YOU !!! i'd been perusing goodreads and when i saw the name katherine arden i was like hm... i swear i've seen this somewhere... then i remembered all the glowing reviews you've given her work and decided to give the bear and the nightingale a shot and wow. i fell in love with her writing style. i devoured the book in a single evening, the setting just draws you in and refuses to let go. i will check these books out after i finish the winternight trilogy 👀👀 the synopsis for 'the warm hands of ghosts' especially caught my eye, she has a knack for unique ideas!!!

Essentially it's about Reader who works for Vox. They don't necessarily have a deal with him; however, they are his favourite very much against their will, so in order to escape attention they Very Much Do Not Want from him, they attempt to make a deal with Alastor.

Bless you for the imagery of Feitan doing things like hovering over you while showing you trays of torture tools that he's meticulously organized just before you got there so he can show them off, just sort of... breathing on you and expecting you to be impressed while you're terrified, wondering if he's making a threat or showing you what will happen if you misbehave, when in reality he's doing the equivalent of proudly showing off a nerdy collection.

LMAO this is the perfect way to sum up the behavior. chrollo encourages you to try and engage with feitan "since it's in your best interest." whatever that means. the next time he brings you down for the apparent bonding session you try to do more than sit there and squirm. randomly pointing at some macabre instrument, and asking him what it is.

"bone saw," he tells you.

"what does it do?"

"saws bone."

"... ah."

"..."

"..."

(never have you wanted chrollo to magically appear and save you from this purgatory more).

still, you're nothing if not determined. you focus on the object next to it.

"and this?"

"ice pick."

"hm?" you blink. "but it's summer."

the chair he's sitting on scrapes when he gets up. he stalks over to you, hand raised. his sallow pointer finger taps your nose.

"goes up," he says.

"..."

"..."

"so, um, what's your favorite color?"

YES. It's the surefire way to really get at him, even with plain ol' non-vampire yandere Chrollo. It makes him short circuit. It sends him on a new path, mentally or otherwise. It's never a path that is going to end particularly well for dear reader as it probably leads to an ever deeper obsession and fascination, but still.

there's something about making this intelligent, self-assured man go :O! at a genuine act of kindness because of how intangible the concept is to him. there has to be a motive, some underlying machination, whether it be conscious or not. it's disquieting if not. he simultaneously knows so much about human beings while not really knowing them. that emotional distance has its benefits, he couldn't live the life he leads if he had the moral misgivings of most.

his darling opening up that pandora's box is both unwelcome and intriguing. because now he has to think about it, or he feels like he's conceded in some way. it's why he likes picking his darling's brain. he might come off as condescending at times with his questions (which he kinda is, but it's a symptom, not the diagnosis), but he does want to learn. not change himself, but expand his horizons further.

everything comes full circle too, since his darling's bound to go ?????????? at this horrible husk of a man being so sincerely touched by something they'd barely give a passing thought. he falls deeper into the trenches of twisted interest when he realizes this all comes as easy to you as breathing.

I can't stop re-reading Idée Fixe. Absolutely fun and ultimately bittersweet dynamic. I love all the little things that Chrollo is clearly struck and pulled in by--her inquisitiveness and warmth and everything else. I love this reader so much and I want all the best for her, but she got stuck with CHROLLO.

THEO as soon as i saw you reblogged it i was getting a fork and knife to devour your tags . i was so unbelievably hype.

honestly, chrollo is such a parasite in this fic. it's as you said. cringefail darling is warm and everything chrollo is not, this shining beacon he wants to cup his hands around so only he can experience her light. it's why i made him somewhat blasé about the turn of events at the end of the story. sure, he isn't ecstatic that he had to take drastic measures due to the lady in the garden, but it's more of a mild irritation. he would've preferred everything to have happened on his own terms. alas... when life gives you lemons.

he obviously foresaw the possibility though, hence him being in possession of beta blockers. the man's nothing if not prepared.

Re: Scaramouche flustered HC. Imagine wife!reader trying to teach Scaramouche to kiss appropriately so she doesn't have to deal with his tongue trying to choke her or his teeth clashing against hers so much. It's worth it in the end (only so many times you can knock teeth!) but RIP reader's self-preservation.

it's all fun and games until he asks you how you have this kissing knowledge in the first place . uh oh.

he'd be a faster learner than xiao, to give him some credit, but he far less patient. lets you gently correct him maybe once if you say it in a cute enough voice. his main thing is that he doesn't know where to put his hands, or why you're so whiny about "needing air" and "personal space". sounds like your problem, not his. he's big on holding the back of your head, essentially holding you in place until you're gasping for breath.

scaramouche's saving grace is that he does taste good. he normally tastes faintly of honey and whatever luxurious tea he's had that day. either that or the wagashi that accompanies it, also of the highest quality.
