Elizabeth assumed Sammy was alive since his mom took him with him when they left. Which was why in The Fourth Closet she just tells him he's alive and that he forgotten her just to get under her skin. She has no way of knowing since she's been stuck in a closet for atleast 15 years(?) maybe. Elizabeth tells her that, and Charlie has no way of proving her wrong. Even if Sammy died out of illness none of them has a way of knowing.
