HOLLANOV + PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005)
Making Mike the main character in the epilogue would've worked better if they didn't sideline him the entire season...
After seeing PHM the first time, I kept going back and forth between whether the betrayal scene was more emotionally devastating in the film vs the book. And had I made a post about it then I would have said the book! He's cornered by two military men who drag him to a holding cell where he then gets to sit and stew on his fate for the four days (or however many it is) leading up to launch. Stratt comes in and talks to him, he hates her and the situation and considers running but decides what's the point? I figured sitting there in dread and anxiety for days on end had to be worse, right? Better to just knock him out so he doesn't have to suffer more.
But the thing is... Book!Grace had time to process what was happening to him. No he didn't agree to it, no he didn't want to do it. But he still got to process it and, in some way or another, grudgingly accept his fate. Resign himself to it, I guess.
And after watching the isolated clip of Grace begging Carl for his life.... I've changed my mind. The film's betrayal scene is so much worse. Movie!Grace didn't get what book!Grace got. He was cornered before he made his run for it, then he was chased down like an animal and ambushed. He was pinned to the ground by multiple military personnel while he screamed himself hoarse, pleading. He begged Carl for help as he scrambled at the grass, breath wheezing in his panic, and was told he was gonna do great as they readied to force him on a suicide mission.
He was sedated without ever being able to process his fate, then put into his coma shortly after. His last memories of Earth are betrayal, dead grass in his hands, and absolute soul rending terror.
