Big Bros Oso and Ichi
In the parental or regression au, whichever is more fun, how would Subaru react to being told he was too little or not strong enough to do something?
Going with the regression Au for this one~
. . .
When he's in that particular headspace, the disconnect between Subaru's current strength and how he feels don't quite add up together. He remembers being too weak to protect his mother, too weak to stand up to his father's control— so hearing it out loud initially feels like a blow. It's easy for shame to close in like that, for that crushing self-loathing to return, but... you don't sound disappointed. You say he's too little like that's not something to be sorry for. Even if his body right now doesn't match the idea of helplessness in his mind, that little push makes him (at least temporarily believe it). He feels horribly guilty for relying on you when he should be the strong one, and yet, it feels shamefully nice that you're not upset with him for being "too weak".
Osomatsu-san Age AU. Part 1: Characters.
Osomatsu (21): He’s always been a lazy NEET that used the excuse of, “I’m helping my parents look after my little brothers,” to avoid work as long as he could. After his parents death he was suddenly forced to not only be their caretaker, but he had to deal with things he never had to before: bills, insurance, their parents’ funeral, fighting to get what savings his dad had, and other things that were just too much for him to handle.
He turned to drinking to help cope. At first it was just to take the edge off, but now it seems like he’s drinking nonstop. He can’t hold a job down because he always shows up drunk. It’s not uncommon for his brothers to find him somewhere in the house black out drunk. Karamatsu covers for him by telling the younger ones that Oso “isn’t feeling well.”
He won’t get his shit together until an incident with Todomatsu getting kidnapped.
Karamatsu (17): Even though he’s only 17, all the household chores fall to him. He has to cook, clean, pay the bills, and look after his siblings. It’s a lot for one person, but he does his best to not show his stress to the others. He was forced to drop out of school at 16 to do this. Oso does feel bad about that, but it’s not enough to get him to sober up.
Karamatsu is very disappointed in Oso and doesn’t hesitate to call him out or nag him. It’s caused a strain on their relationship, but Kara acts like he gets along with him when the others are around.
Oso’s constant job hunting doesn’t always provide them with all the money they need, so when he can, Kara works at his friend’s, Chibita’s, oden stand for money. Chibita also dropped out of school to open his own business. He doesn’t mind when Kara brings Totty to the stand and helps watch him.
Choromatsu (13): After the death of their parents he became more serious, trying to be more mature and act above his age. This makes him unpopular with his classmates who think he’s become a stuck up, know-it-all, but he doesn’t mind because he still has his brothers and his friend, Happi.
He knows how hard Karamatsu works, so he tries to help out when he can by helping with chores or looking after the younger ones. Kara is grateful for the help, but sometimes he wishes Choro would lighten up and enjoy his childhood more.
Choro hasn’t fully processed his parents death because he tries to push his feelings away by taking care of his siblings, and studying more. He’s always had trouble studying, so he used to avoid it, but now he’s trying harder. What he doesn’t know is that he has an undiagnosed learning disorder (not dyslexia like Karamatsu) and that makes it harder for him to understand and follow his studies. He has to work twice as hard as other kids just to make decent grades, and that really frustrates him.
Another thing that upsets him is Osomatsu. He knows Oso isn’t “sick” at times like Karamatsu says and knows he’s just drunk. He nags Oso the most to straighten up, but the eldest just smiles and tells him to “act more like a kid,” as he continues to drink.
His repressed emotions, Oso’s childishness, and his frustrations at his studies are building up inside him and it’ll just take one more thing to set everything off…
Ichimatsu (10): After their parents death his personality changed: He became more depressed and lacked motivation in a lot of things he used to like. They can’t afford to send him to a therapist, so he’s forced to go see the school’s therapist during school. Rumors started to spread that he’s dangerous and did something awful to be forced to see the therapist, so a lot of his classmates avoid him. Some classmates try to bully him, but he leans into the rumors and acts crazy to scare them off. The only people that hang around him anymore are Jyushimatsu and Yanagida. He has two other “friends”, but he knows they’re only hanging around because Yana is.
He used to look up to Karamatsu, but now he’s pushing him away and acts like he hates him. Kara thinks it’s just due to the trauma, so he tries not to hold it against Ichi, though some of the things Ichi says does hurt him.
The reason Ichi is doing this is because he doesn’t like that Karamatsu is now acting less like a brother and trying to be more like a father figure. He’s also upset that Kara’s put his own life on hold just to take care of them. He can’t express these feelings though and instead just acts out.
Jyushimatsu (10): The ball of sunshine! He’s always there to lighten the mood with a joke or a silly gag. He doesn’t understand that Oso is often drunk and just thinks his eldest brother is just being silly! He loves to help doing chores, but he’s not too good at it and often ends up making a mess rather than helping. That’s ok though, because he can help play with Totty! He’s really good at that!
He doesn’t do too well in school. He can’t sit still or stay quiet for too long, so he always gets in trouble for standing out of his seat or talking to the person closest to him. He often has to stay after school and clean as punishment (Ichi waits for him), and gets notes sent home about his behavior. His teacher thinks he’s just a troublemaker like Osomatsu (who they used to have), but in reality he has undiagnosed ADHD. They don’t try to understand him though and just think that punishing him enough will get him to behave eventually.
Todomatsu (3): The baby. He was an unexpected pregnancy, so his parents doted and spoiled him before their death. His brothers continued this, especially Karamatsu who he spends the most time with. Since they can’t afford preschool, and they can’t always ask neighbors to babysit him for free, he’s usually at home with Kara or at the oden stand. “My cuteness attwacts custumws,” he says in his baby voice.
When he’s four, there’s a day when Kara is too swamped at the stand to look after him, so Kara called Oso to look after Totty. All Oso had to do was watch him by the nearby park until things calmed down, but the eldest was drunk. While watching Totty, a man in a plaid suit came up and offered Oso a six pack. The eldest happily accepted and went to a bench to drink. While Oso was distracted, the man led Totty away with offers of candy.
When Kara came back all he saw was Oso drinking on the bench and Totty nowhere in sight. This led to him punching his eldest and the two started to fight. Chibita came over to investigate the noise and found out what happened. Chibita and Kara left to look for Totty and get help, leaving Oso on his own to sober up.
Luckily they found Totty before nightfall and Chibita was able to capture the kidnapper with some rope, but the event still traumatized a lot of them. This event made Oso realize how much of a shitty brother he had become and he gave up drinking. He’s able to hold down a job and provide more money for his siblings.
I literally cried in the middle of drawing this
So, I ran through all your assorted Animorph AUs on ao3, and I enjoyed the what if they were 33/23/3 prompts, especially the final gag of Elfangor going off to find someone else other than the three year olds.
But what about the other end of the age bracket? Fully going to the other extreme of 93 would probably result in the same thing as the 3 year olds, but how about 63?
People with full lives behind them, adult children and grandchildren that they want to protect. Who's freshly retired? Who's still holding on because they don't have retirement savings? Who's being forced out of the organization they built over decades by a younger generation (actually controllers taking things over)?
Tom as the Kind Grandpa Paternalistic Community Leader of the Sharing? Or do the yeerks not want to use hosts of that age?
The sheer relief of a lifetime's worth of aches and pains disappearing after the first time they morph? The loss of scars they've worn for years and decades?
