You know what I truly hate about all this age restriction, identification, ai hacking everything and your data being free game stuff. You either have to learn a lot of technology real fast to protect yourself, or you’re just going to have to accept your new data hungry overlords.

I don’t have time to research how to best defend my data outside of the well known and standard options. I don’t have time to figure out a new program, or how to get into the code of my phone. I don’t know how to decide what search engine is better suited for my needs. I shouldn’t have to fortify myself and be suspicious of everything just so that I can safely do research for an essay I need to write for my study.

I followed a computer class a few years ago. I was pretty good at it. Then I don’t pay attention to technology for a few years and suddenly everything is different, worse, and wants to do you harm.

And I also know that I won’t be able to convince my family that they need to protect themselves. I couldn’t even talk my mom out of buying something from TEMU. And if their data gets stolen, my information will be in there too. Even if I do manage to protect myself.

So I’m fucked either way. Just trying to live your life shouldn’t be this difficult.

With all these news of countries wanting to ban social media for minors my heart goes to all queer and disabled kids that for any reason are not capable of socialization irl and to whom society is saying "Go die lonely and alone".

Re the new age restrictions on Tumblr: even if you believe that these kinds of measures are necessary (which is a whole different topic so we're not getting into it here), you should still demand that Tumblr improves their moderation system for mature posts, because, as it is right now, it's really damn bad.

Tumblr still uses the same algorithm that would tag pics of desert dunes as nsft years ago, and even if you appeal a post that was wrongly mislabeled as nsft, Tumblr might completely ignore you or double down. This means that people whose accounts get age restricted or people who don't want to give out their personal information for verification will have completely sfw posts hidden from them because of Tumblr's broken algorithm.

Here's a post of mine that got hit with the mature filter. Nothing nsfw about it and yet it's been months since I asked Tumblr to review it without any response. And I'm far from being the only one affected.

(Tumblr also doesn't notify you when a post gets hit with the mature filter, if I'm not mistaken, it's up to you to notice this)

So I would encourage everyone to take a look of this other post someone made, copy the text in it and send it to staff (make sure to select "feedback" on the category tab).

To everyone else who's also concerned about how ineffective and potentially dangerous these age restriction laws are, make sure to contact your country's representatives to tell them why you oppose these laws. By this point most Western countries are either implementing age restrictions laws or thinking about it so if you live in the West you should keep an eye out for this and fight against it.

All this legislation to remove children from the internet is going to straightforwardly increase child abuse. Online spaces for kids to talk to eachother are being removed. Spaces in physical space have already been removed. as a former child in the 2010s I can attest that physical spaces were hostile to me and my friends hanging out, and we at the very least had public transit. The consequence of having children only be able to talk to eachother in places with parental supervision or school because they have no freedom of movement and no private spaces is that child abuse will be very easy to get away with. Parents, family, and family friends have always been the largest perpetrators of abuse and CSA.

Youtube is trying to downplay this and say it will affect only a few Youtube accounts but I fear it will affect way more accounts then they say it will because we seen this happen before. Everyone should contact youtube about this and call this out.

When my younger brother calls me a child when I watch my comfort shows. I'm 20 and autistic and I really like kids shows like Wild Kratts, Care Bears, Octonauts, ect. It's not just my younger brother but others in my family who don't get that I just like watching care bears and other children's media

"Do you ever watch something that's not for babies and toddlers" yes I do I just also like these shows they help regulate my emotions

This is infantilization.

The constant infantilization surrounding cartoons and animated series/movies does not only affect the adult viewers of them, but also children that parents see something +18 but it's animated so they don't check the labels and the children are then traumatised/affected.
