Now I won't lie. I may not always be a fanatic reader that devours books in the course of hours, instead it usually takes me days or weeks to simply finish a book that I am reading. This has started to change slightly this year though as I start to read far more than I usually would have. And when I mean read, I don't mean just choose my favorite books or genre and simply read everything that fills that slightly narrow criteria. This year I have really adopted the mentality of, if it has words, and somewhat literary merit (No fifty shades of grey. Controversial?) then I will read it without hesitation. Of course I still have my favorite books and genres to go back to for leisure, but I have expanded and started to erode the boundaries that I have built up in my mind as to what I deem as good reading material. Which is a fucking fantastic thing!
At the risk of sounding like a melodramatic hipster, I really do think that books are a dying resource as most people are adopting e-readers for novels as well as the internet for every other source of information. And I cannot judge people for preferring other mediums in which to read, I am not one of those people to profess that those who don't read books are missing the feeling of paper and turning a page, because to be honest, although little things like that are important, they are also so trivial that it can become debilitating to get caught up in those minor details. My only argument for pro books are simply the fact that I love the aesthetic look of a giant bookshelf filled with books (which unfortunately I don't have at the moment as there is simply no space for it.)
I don't even know what the intent of this post is nor where I was intending for it to go, I simply wanted to write something I suppose? But anyway, if there is one thing for people to take from this who managed to read this post to this point is to simply challenge yourself and read outside of what you deem as fun or entertaining. Read a biography, go and read a childrens book even. I promise that you will (hopefully) not regret it and realise that those are someones words, even if they aren't the words that you would necessarily wish to read.
