Shinoda shuffled papers and sighed. He couldn’t deny that the new Media Countermeasures Chief was useful for dealing with civilians, who in his experience were touchy, twitchy, troublesome beings who needed near-constant supervision and at least ten months of hard training before they even came near to being reasonable people- but the man’s squawking, whenever it could be resolved into words, grated on his nerves. He seemed to think that around every corner lurked a reporter with a full camera crew and national broadcast coverage, and completely refused to consider that, as Shinoda had suggested to him, if any of them wandered into the Forbidden Zone looking for a scoop about Neighbours or otherwise, they damn well deserved to get killed.
And he came up with such inexplicable ideas.
“Next squad, please,” said Sawamura. Miwa Squad, their captain looking like death as Yoneya laughingly pulled him away, bowed politely and left the meeting room.
A squad of reliable and well-spoken agents to liase with citizens and media on the ground, Netsuki had said. The face of Border, not just the brass. If they could be attractive, good students, and preferably not consumed with a hatred that had no end or mercy or respite, that would also have been great.
Actually, now Shinoda couldn’t see why they’d let Miwa Squad get to the interview portion. Surely it would have been better to not waste their A-rank squads on this nonsense?
“We’d just sort of like to see more…stature,” said Netsuki. Kazama listened attentively. “Not that you’re not…,” he fumbled. “…not,” he said. Kazama watched him patiently. “We just feel… preferably…” Kazama dipped his head politely, encouraging him to continue. It was awful.
“If we end up needing you guys, we’ll call you,” said Rindo, taking pity. “Shouldn’t, but just so you know.”
“Our duties as defense agents would take precedence in any case,” Kazama said, mercifully.
“Yes!” said Netsuki gratefully. “Yes, yes, your duties, dear… boy… you have to… attend to those.” He sat back and let his breath out.
“Next,” said Sawamura.
Jin stepped into the room and saluted smartly. He opened his mouth-
“NEXT.”
He shrugged, blew Sawamura-san a kiss, and sauntered back out. She shut the door after him. “I think he’s the last one,” she reported.
Shinoda did not slump in his seat. The commander was going to be quite sarcastic about this. Or worse, silent.
The door opened one more time. And it let in… a miracle.
Who walked confidently towards them, hand outstretched. His teeth gleamed.
“I want to volunteer my squad to be the face of Border,” he said.
They stared.
“We’re only a B-rank squad for now,” he said. He stared deeply into their eyes. “But I’m confident that I know my little brother and sister would feel so much better if only there was someone from Border to reassure them that everything was going to be alright. I know what everyone will feel better knowing they’re getting prompt and accurate information from people who know what they’re doing. I want to help the people feel safe.”
The vision paused, taking in their dazed faces. “Is this right?” he said uncertainly. “Only Jin-san said that you were accepting B-rank squads for review and I should just walk in…”
Netsuki rose from his seat like a drowning man to grasp that outstretched hand. “We’ll have to meet the rest of your squad,” he said.
“Not a problem,” said the vision. “They feel the same way.”
“We may need to redesign that uniform,” Netsuki said.
“We have some ideas for that when we get to A-Rank.”
“How do you feel about a pay rise,” said Netsuki.
Arashiyama- yes, that was his name, Shinoda remembered now- frowned lightly. “If you feel it’s necessary,” he said. “But I consider that it’s incumbent on every Border agent to step forward as duty calls.” He smiled. “But for my squad, certainly. They work hard and they won’t let you down.”
That was another reason the Media Countermeasures Chief was hard to get along with, thought Shinoda. It was just so damn uncomfortable to watch a grown man cry.
