I think magic is not kindness or beauty. kindness and beauty and all the good of humanity are normal human things. there’s no magic in mundane but lovely aspects of life beyond magic in the metaphorical sense, in the sense that it feels magical. humans are good and the world is good and that’s only considered magic because humans are also bad and the world is also bad. that’s no miracle, though. people have a hard time thinking about one thing as being two things at once, but nothing is only one thing anyways. everything is so many things at once. that’s the whole trouble of it. the world is good and bad and every other thing. magic is everything, including the world, but the world isn’t magic for being good. magic is more than that.
I think magic is will. I think magic is that we can look at something, and be a little speck in the universe, and make a decision. magic is that we can hold a paintbrush and move it around and create something that hadn’t existed until the moment it did. we can change the world with our hands. we change the world just by being here, and being able to decide things, and existing. I could walk across the room and pick up a pencil and move it back here, and it would be in a different place then it was before. sure, you can make the free will argument, but how can you, really? the last time you went somewhere, you were in a different place than you had been before, because you decided to be there, even if it wasn’t exactly your decision. you could break something right now, if there’s something around that can be broken.
there are so many people in so many ways who can’t decide. that is sad, and hurts, but the consolation is that there will always be little choices. you could be trapped in every way, and still choose to move a certain way or think a certain thought or do something or not do something or any other one of the million choices a person could make. there’s no way to restrict and control every little choice. even if it’s so much, if you’ve been stripped of all power, you can (metaphorically, at least) kick and scream the whole way through. you get to be a thing that exists and thinks. that, even in the absence of everything else, is so much power. more power than you know. that’s magic.
