Dementia in cats becomes more common as they age, but it’s up to us to love them regardless and tend to them with more care and kindness. Th

We have three cats, currently. All were adopted from rescues, and technically all of them are a little ... off .. in one way or another.
The oldest, by barely an estimated month, is our little black cat, Shadow. She looks like she should weigh probably 8-10 pounds. She has short little legs, a round teddy bear face, teeny little paws and a bent abbreviated tail. Unfortunately, through one thing and another she's been as much as 15 pounds. In the process of trying to get her to be more active, and also eat less, we discovered she has hyperthyroidism. We had to back down to being more careful, and get her on medication. She's down a few pounds, although not as far as she should be, I'm sure. She's also 12 years old. So, with luck, we'll have another few years with her, but part of me recognizes that's highly variable. We'll just keep doing our best.
All that said, it's interesting how we've both adapted, my non-cat-raised husband, and myself (living among cats of one or many since I was born). We have learned what her calls mean, and do what we can to support her as she's been aging. She has steps to get up to our bed in the bedroom, and we adjust the recliners so she can get up on the furniture if she wants. A few cat trees she can access on her own, but chairs are hard for her short little legs.
She just fussed at us until I reached down and helped her up on the sofa with us, stomped over to my husband (I'm the spare human in her eyes) for a moment of comfort, then stomped back over to flop against my legs and look up at me with a sigh (I wiped her face/eyes - like many shelter cats, she has chronic weepy eyes from upper respiratory that left her with overactive tear ducts). She blinked slowly at me then got up and turned around to look down. "She wants down." My husband said, so I adjusted the legs of the chair and she's gone off to play with toys.
That all took less than 15 minutes. And honestly? She probably would also like her meds, since it's about that time.
She communicates great. I still wish we had a common language that allowed for more explaining.
