Fresh Salad This winter, I have been experimenting on a small scale with different ways to produce a winter crop of salad fixings for our table. #homestead #garden #momlife #growingfood #organicgarden #wintergarden #lettuce

Even though my husband and I grow and preserve an abundance of food for the family, I still buy lettuce in the winter. We do have all sorts of canned and frozen veggies to choose from during the fall, winter and spring. Since they are already prepared most of the time, there’s not much work in serving them either! In one of the greenhouses I hang #agribon 50weight as a internal shade just engough of a drop to keep all these baby #squash #cucumbers #salads nice and cozy and not to dry . It from my reading is equivalent to 60 percent shade cloth without the breaking down effect the black shade clothe has on greenhouse plastics . This will be also covering the cat tunnel soon as they are harder to regulate in temp .

Planting Broccoli on Groundhogs Day

That’s my flat of broccoli starts up there! They are sitting in my high tunnel, next to some collards. Kale and more collards are under the fabric to the left. I started the broccoli seeds on the Winter Solstice hoping I might plant them today, Groundhogs Day. And I did!

The soil temperature in the tunnel is 58 degrees and the irrigation system has been working just fine. It’s been windy today…
