If you’re doing what I think you’re doing, You’d Better Not Be.
Or so the parchment would read to those without a dispelling spell, in fine academic script carefully practiced in basic black inks. It’s been left open on the writing table in Ahllexann’s room, a short, lit candle melting its way down through what’s left of the night.
They and their fellows were due to trek to the Garrison in mere hours, so it was fortunate that they had plenty of time to think on their words on the ride back to the Inn, making for quick writing.
To the intended recipient, Sylvan would drift across the page..
Aed,
I wanted to apologise for how I spoke to you. It was unfair, and you were quite correct. You did not promise me answers to most things, only leads. I do also wish to say that you hadn’t needed to spare my life so much as just buy me a single moment. That’s all it would’ve taken for Angelo’s spectre to be vanquished.
I am more frustrated by my inability to check in with you, to share what I find and ask if I am chasing the right path. I feel as though I’m sprinting blindly into ghosts of maybes and almosts. It’s hard to say if I’m really going anywhere at all, and I can’t even ask your opinion. That, I think, is what infuriates me so.
I’m not fond of this arrangement with Valkir. It’s false, ultimately, but I also know I will need the armor soon enough. This power does, however, belong to Romi, and if the dragon is not willing to share me with you, then I may try to convince Romi of this. Part of me wonders if I could Charm him into it if need be. I would never be forgiven, most likely, but the arrangement of destinies at play here would sort themselves back out again.
I’d be a pacifist if I could, and I do not agree with the concept of war on principle. Valkir and I are an unfit partnership. Maybe you already know this. I should hope so, at any rate. I know the orbs are important to you, and I know you were trying to spare my life. I just hope that if there is a next time, things will go differently.
I also should apologise for not properly coming to your defense. Valkir was also unfair, god or no. But that would be part of the nature of War, wouldn’t it?
I hope you’ll forgive me. I seek to do better. And I hope we can find some way to communicate more regularly, regardless of whether or not this works.

They find themselves surrounded by a bustling marketplace, pulled down the street by a group of teenaged girls, gleeful and giggling and generally delighted by this venture.
“This is going to be the best party! Aren’t you so excited to dress up and dance?! He’ll be there, you know.”
It’s not their face they’re remembering through, but they feel the flush all the same, a giggle not theirs escaping. Lexann understood Ahl’s implication, and was indignantly trying to get the conversation of sorts to change.
“Must you be this way?”
He wouldn’t budge, letting the memory play out for a while until she couldn’t stand it and threatened to wake.
“I’m your big brother. I’m allowed to pick on you,” said a lanky young man hardly a month older than 16. Her perspective was small, making him seem taller than the trees just a ways over, and there was a distinct feeling of her hair being ruffled dramatically, a chuckle echoing on the spring wind.
There was a shift in scene again and she found herself looking around a young girl’s room, and she registered the shifting weight of another person on the edge of the bed. “Ahlmaria, it’s okay to feel these things. It’s okay to like someone.”
The smell of soft flowers, jasmine perhaps, filled her head, her shoulder receiving a muted pat or three over the blanket she was buried under.
“I don’t know what I’m doing.”
A: Aptitude
1. what are your oc’s natural abilities, things they’ve been doing since young?
Dancing, paying attention to people, observing the world
2. what activities have they participated in?
Unknown definition of activities, but they spend a lot of time reading. They can, to some extent, draw, play the lyre, and identify the constellations in the sky. They’ve gone to forums and things too as part of their work and education.
3. what abilities do they have that they’ve worked for?
Note-taking and navigation by the night sky. Languages. Caring for small gardens.
4. what things are they bad at?
People, usually. Tying scarves. Remembering that they don’t have to do things entirely on their own. Baking. Sewing.
5. what is their most impressive talent?
Magic, evidently. Will need updating later.
B: Basics
1. what is their hair color?
Very blonde, but not white.
2. what is their eye color?
Green, unless they’re feeling particularly strong emotions, then they glow purple a bit. Or a lot.
3. how tall are they?
5′10
4. how old are they?
Recently 28
5. how much do they weigh?
130lbs
Cont. under the readmore
C: Comfort
1. how do they sit in a chair?
Casually, they do some variation or another of “the gay sit” with feet in the chair, usually crossed at the ankles. In the presence of company, they’re more inclined to sit properly.
2. in what position do they sleep?
Flat on their back, usually hands folded over their middle. Occasionally curled up in a ball on one side or the other.
3. what is their ideal comfort day?
Sunny, warm, not too humid. Nighttime is a clear, crisp evening.
4. what is their major comfort food? why?
Savory buns. They were one of the first foods they ate upon landing in the Guilded Providence. Their first taste of true freedom.
5. who is the best at comforting them when down?
Ahl, their companion.
D: Decoration
1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name?
There’d need to be a skylight somewhere. Books everywhere. A writing desk by a window. Lots of neutral tones, probably, but not beige or cream. Greens, blues, rich browns. There’d be a window herb garden in the kitchen if they couldn’t have an outright greenhouse or proper garden. Flowers on tables, whatever’s local and in season.
2. how would they decorate their child’s room?
They don’t well expect to have any.
3. how do they decorate their own room?
A functional bed, at the least. Maybe a rug. There’s a chest at the foot of the bed, and all of the regular essentials, but they’d hope for a bay window to put pillows in to read from the bookshelves lining the walls. There’d be a drafting table taking up one wall, and a stand for their lyre by a chair near the window. Curtains dotted with embroidered constellations, for when the daylight’s too much to bear.
4. what type of clothes and accessories do they wear?
A strange mix of masculine and feminine. It’s not deliberately enough to confuse people, but it’s whatever they both can agree on. Ahl’s a fair bit pickier than Lexann, and they’re okay with that. She never really bothered to learn what looks “good” on herself in the first place. They’re typically pretty functional over form, either way. Layers are a big favourite. And pockets. And pants.
5. do they like makeup/nail/beauty trends?
Oh gods no, perhaps to the disdain of some.
E: External Personality
1. does the way they do things portray their internal personality?
Sometimes. Because they are two, it’s hard to separate one person’s inner from the other.
2. do they do things that conform to the norm?
Another vague one. They try to behave as normally as they can, but it’s often not always enough on its own.
3. do they follow trends or do their own thing?
They largely do their own thing, because being trendy tends to take attention away from whatever their current focus is. If it seems nice or useful, they might at least give it a try. Or observe someone else doing it and decide from there.
4. are they up-to-date on the internet fads?
That would require the internet to exist in this DnD world :p
5. do they portray their personality intentionally or let people figure it out on their own?
It largely ends up being a game of discovery, especially right now. It’s hard to know who to trust at first. Some things just can’t really be hidden, though.
F: Fun
1. what do they do for fun?
Learn something new. Go for a walk. Play their lyre. Have a hopefully witty conversation. Investigate something. Find a new perspective. Probably recreational drugs to get out of their own head once in a while.
2. what is their ideal party?
There is food, 3-5 people, some sort of pet-able creature, and talking is optional. Or 1 tavern, a lot of other people drinking until their eyes swim, and a surprise band consisting of themselves and some bards probably.
3. who would they have the most fun with?
They’re not really sure yet.
4. can they have fun while conforming to rules?
Isn’t breaking the rules part of the fun?
5. do they go out a lot?
Depends on one’s definition of “go out.”
G: Gorgeous
1. what is their most attractive external feature?
Yes? Everything? This is a weirdly subjective question to ask about my own character. They’d probably go to accentuate their eyes if they wanted someone to pay attention, though.
2. what is the most attractive part of their personality?
Their curiousity and occasionally fervent focus.
3. what benefits come with being their friend?
Have a weird question or curiousity? They’ll ransack libraries for you and chase any other leads that they can scare up. Especially if it involves using techniques they already have in their pocket. Gifts of tea or scones. A good time, maybe?
4. what parts of them do they like and dislike?
They find their inability to grasp certain intricacies of people very frustrating. And sometimes the two argue over things. They’re very proud of how far they’ve come in life, though.
5. what parts of others do they envy?
How easy things seem to be.
H: Heat
1. do they rather a hot or cold room?
Comfortable. Possibly on the cooler end for the sake of coziness.
2. do they prefer summer or winter?
Summer, easily.
3. do they like the snow?
Sometimes it’s pretty. And then it melts and makes an utter mess of everything.
4. do they have a favorite summer activity?
Beach combing, when possible, or climbing trees to read in them.
5. do they have a favorite winter activity?
Sleep. Eating. Puzzles. Playing with fire.
I: In-the-closet
1. what is their sexuality?
They’ve never bothered to explore it when there was so much about the world they didn’t already know. It seemed silly. They might be ace.
2. have they ever questioned their sexuality?
Considering they are two, it’s such a complex question that while they’ve probably wondered, it wasn’t worthwhile to figure out.
3. have they ever questioned their gender?
This isn’t really a thing for them, I think. At least in their family, Kalashtar decide what they are when it suits them. Being two, no one is willing to make someone be one way or another until they decide for themselves. And even then, change is permissible.
4. would/was their family be okay with them being LGBT?
They wouldn’t really have the option, even if they weren’t okay with it.
5. how long would/did it take for them to come out?
They were probably 10 or so when they decided that functioning as one unit, taking from both and dedicating themselves to neither in particular was the best way forward.
J: Joy
1. what makes them happy?
Once, it was playing in the garden. Then it was learning about the world and going out to experience it. Then it was the stars. They’re in a long turning point of their life now, and things are scary. So there’s no one big thing, aside from perhaps being able to make someone smile, solve their problem, or enjoying a good cup of tea.
2. who makes them happy?
Ahl will cheer Lexann up when she needs it most, but everything is still new and fresh and there’s no one or even a few people who do this specifically. Though helping Elliott seems to be doing some things.
3. are there any songs that bring them joy?
Music in general can. They don’t really have one in particular.
4. are they happy often?
Depends on the day, and what one considers “often”
5. what brings them the most joy in the world?
Learning, under the current circumstances.
K: Kill
1. have they ever thought about suicide?
No.
2. have they ever thought about homicide?
Occasionally. Though it would be less useful over time, and doesn’t really fit their moral guidelines. Necessity makes things a fair bit different, however.
3. if they could kill anyone without punishment, would they? who?
They’d certainly think about it.
4. who would miss them if they died?
They’ve never given thought to this question, and aren’t entirely sure. Maybe one of their colleagues from their previous University.
5. who would be happy they died, anyone?
The Encryptors, surely.
L: Lemons
1. what is their favorite fruit?
Strawberries, though the same could be said for many safe-to-eat berries.
2. what is their least favorite fruit?
Anything with a particularly strong scent. Certain types of melon.
3. are there any foods they hate?
Travel bread.
4. do they have any food intolerances?
Slimy foods, but if we’re talking things like gluten intolerance, no.
5. what is their favorite food?
A good scone or seasonal Spring salad from their previous place of residence in Guilded Providence. The local produce and spices were always delightful.
M: Maternal
1. would they want a daughter or a son?
This isn’t something they think about, especially in terms of gendered concepts.
2. how many children do they want?
They don’t know that children would fit into any life that they hold. The future is currently dictated by something bigger than themselves, so it doesn’t bear thinking about.
3. would they be a good parent?
In theory, yes. They know how children deserve to be treated and nurtured and loved. In practicality, they’re not so sure they’d do a good job.
4. what would they name a son? what would they name a daughter?
See numbers 1 and 2 of this section.
5. would they adopt?
Absolutely.
N: Never Have I Ever
1. what would they never do?
Deliberately murder a child.
2. what have they never done that they want to do?
Kiss someone. Get so plastered that even Ahl can’t remember what happened for the sake of doing it once.
3. is there anything they absolutely can’t believe people do?
Use pages from books as toilet paper.
4. what is the most embarrassing thing they’ve done?
Tossup between sprinting to class in the rain, tripping, and scattering their charts into the mud, or drunkenly forcing Elliott to take half of their share of the payment from a job.
5. have they done anything they thought they’d never do?
Survive home long enough to leave it. Become a Warlock. Embark on a quest to save their sister. Use magic. Be pretty okay it it. Like? someone?
O: Optimism
1. are they optimistic or pessimistic?
A bit of both, depending on the evidence of the situation.
2. are they openly optimistic, throwing it on others?
Depends on how needed it seems to be.
3. are they good at giving advice?
Sometimes. Sometimes it backfires terribly.
4. is there anyone in their life that throws optimism on them?
Ahl, sometimes too much so.
5. were they always optimistic?
Before their sister went missing, I think so. But losing someone so dear has been hard.
P: Personality
1. what is their best personality trait?
Their determination, patience, and willingness to generally be along for the ride as long as they get what they need.
2. what is their worst personality trait?
Sometimes that patience runs out. They’re also resistant to not being self-reliant.
3. what of their personality do others love?
4. what of their personality do others envy?
5. do they hate anything about their personality/about other’s personalities?
They have great disdain for deliberate liars and those who manipulate or otherwise abuse others, particularly children.
Q: Questions
1. do they ask for help?
Not as often as they probably should, but it’s getting better.
2. do they ask questions in class?
Absolutely. Sometimes too many.
3. do they answer questions that make them a little uncomfortable?
Highly circumstantial.
4. do they ask weird questions?
Often enough that it’s A Thing.
5. are they curious?
Abso-fucking-lutely. Cornerstone of who they are.
R: Rules
1. do they follow rules?
Until they’re problematic or otherwise getting in their way, yes.
2. would they be a strict or laid-back parent?
They aren’t sure. They’d have to be caring for a child actively to know.
3. have they ever been consequenced for breaking a rule?
Often enough to know when certain rules are particularly stupid and are effectively designed to be broken.
4. have they broken any rules they now regret breaking?
Nope. Well. Okay. Maybe shattering that tomb, but that wasn’t really a rule... Plus they got a friend out of it. So nope. No regrets.
5. do they find any rules they/others follow absolutely ridiculous?
Slavery as a concept. Child labor. Not permitting donating to those who need. Not supporting children in education because of a social class difference. Warlocks being shunned in general, and in certain circles, outright banned. Love between consenting adults.
S: Streets
1. are they street-smart?
Not always, but they’ve had some opportunities to learn.
2. would they give money to someone on the streets?
Context required.
3. have they ever gotten in a fight on the streets?
There was a fight on a rooftop but that was in relation to a case...
4. has anything happened to them on the streets?
They’ve had their pockets picked for sure on at least one occasion. They’ve been mugged once, I think. And overcharged several times before they caught on.
5. are they cautious when out?
In a new place, yes. Once they figure out how the locals handle things, they relax a bit and spend more time blending in.
T: Truth
1. are they honest?
Sometimes to a fault.
2. can they tell if someone is lying?
Not with perfect accuracy, certainly, but they know to be skeptical of certain kinds of claims and will go and do their homework.
3. is it obvious when they’re lying?
Sometimes. But it really depends on the situation.
4. have they lied about anything they regret lying about?
I’m sure they have the usual childhood regrets, but if there’s anything in particular that they’d regret, it was telling their young sister that they’d be home soon, only to have to write later that they wouldn’t be coming home soon.
5. have they told truths that have been spread against their will?
Maybe.
U: Underdog
1. have they been bullied?
I don’t think they would’ve let it bother them, if they had. It’s more of an annoyance than anything, and lets them know who not to bother associating with.
2. have they bullied anyone?
Not deliberately.
3. have they been physically attacked by a bully?
No. They’re unsettling enough in general to not typically be worth bothering.
4. have they ever been doubted?
I think their mother doubted them when they threatened to leave. And making their way as a young person in science certainly left plenty of room for doubt, mistakes, and growth. They definitely doubted themselves once they got on the boat to leave home for a while.
5. have they surprised people with being good at something?
They’ve surprised Professor Buttersworth, sure, but I think past them would be surprised with how much current them has accomplished.
V: Vomit
1. do they vomit often?
No.
2. do they get lots of stomach aches?
Nope.
3. are they good at comforting someone ill?
Sometimes. Depends on the person and the ailment.
4. what do they like as far as comfort goes?
Not having to worry about everyday things like laundry, dishes, cooking, and generally being a functional person.
5. do they burp, cough, or hiccup most when nauseous? when vomiting?
They cry when vomiting. They’re not used to it and it’s highly unpleasant. When nauseous, it depends on the source.
W: Water
1. do they drink enough water?
With as much tea as they drink, I sure as shit hope so.
2. have they learned to swim?
Nope.
3. do they like to swim?
That’s dependent on number two.
4. can they dive?
Also dependent on number two.
5. can they swim without holding their nose?
Definitely not.
X: Xylophone
1. what is their favorite genre of music?
Travelling songs and some types of sea shanty.
2. do they have a favorite song?
They think they have one, but they always lose it to time.
3. do they have a favorite band/artist/singer?
I don’t think they do. They tend to pick up folk music.
4. can they sing well?
Apparently so, but I don’t think they believe anyone when they tell them so.
5. can they rap?
Gods no.
Y: You
1. how old were you when you created them?
25? I don’t know how old I am.
2. what inspired you to create them?
DND lol
3. were they different when they were first created?
A little bit. More Angry.
4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?
Not yet?
5. what’s your favorite thing about them?
I can relate to a lot of things about them.
Z: Zebra
1. what’s their favorite animal?
They don’t have a favourite yet.
2. do they like animals?
Oftentimes.
3. cats or dogs?
Yes.
4. what’s their dream pet?
Something fluffy.
5. do they have any pets at the moment?
They own a horse named Bob.
They’re viewing from the perspective of someone much shorter than themselves. There’s an elder man reaching to ruffle their hair. “I’m so proud of you,” he says, his eyes crinkling with the smile spreading over his face.
“You worked so hard, and you did it.”
Not hard enough. I’m not any closer-
The scene fades, and is replaced by a forest sometime in the late spring. Lexann knows this place well. She was looking for her sister, who’d toddled off after a butterfly of some sort or another. “Sasha! Mum’s going to be upset if we don’t go home soon. Where’ve you gone?”
Time zipped by to the point where they felt the weight of her sister on their hip, trudging back to camp, her mother fussing over dinner as the stars started to peek out from the darkened sky.
That was then. This is now. It’s been almost a year, Ahl! I was so sure..
A series of images flickers by until he settles on one of a long hug. The sentiment was understood, but it wasn’t going to ease the ache in their chest so easily.
If you’re reading this, I wasn’t able to find you first. And if they didn’t tell you I was still alive when they gave it to you, then I must not be. We’re walking into a lot of unknowns and things in a few hours that, in truth, terrify me in ways I’m not able to express. We may not walk out again. But I’m hoping to find you. I’ve been looking for you for so long.. I just wanted you to know that I didn’t give up and that I was, and hopefully still am, trying so hard to find you. I love you, and I’m sorry I never got to properly teach you what you needed to know about the world.
