People who say that this season of American Horror Story is the worst due to it's gore are missing the point. What Ryan Murphy has cleverly done is created a series where each season is it's own subgenre.

Season 1 Murder House: Fear of Loss. Losing a spouse, a child, a lover. (Why do you think so many crimes are acts of passion?)

Season 2 Asylum: Fear of the Mind. Being locked in your mind, having no one believe that you aren't crazy, until you begin to question it yourself. (Why do you think there are so many services to help people with mental illness?)

Season 3 Coven: Fear of Women. The male fear that women are powerful, unknowable, mysterious, and preternatural. (Why do you think there is misogyny?)

Season 4 Freak Show: Fear of Others. The fear that someone different to yourself is a danger to your security. (Why do you think so many people are hateful to people of other cultures?)

Season 5 Hotel: Fear of the Body (body horror). The fear of decay, disease, mutation, mutilation, or even parasitism. (Why do you think the latest trend in horror is "torture porn"?)

If you don't like this season of AHS, maybe it's because this is the season that most affects you.
