There was no denying that the week had been almost painfully long, and Mirabel’s energy had begun to wane very nearly in the middle of it. But, the weekend had come at long last, and she couldn’t have been more thrilled. With her duties completed and chores taken care of, she drank in the excitement of the prospect of a glorious two days filled with nothing. Rather, nothing aside from what she wanted to do. What she felt like. Having free time was something Mirabel was unaccustomed to, having come up in a home filled with constant bustle, and persistent comings and goings. Silence wasn’t something she’d ever been comfortable with, much like she hadn’t ever become truly comfortable with herself. And, silence only seemed to perpetuate the latter, leaving her with nothing but the roaring of her own mind.
Still, it was a state she was willing to brave in favor of exploration- exploration of this new, foreign idea of personal time. So, she’d planned accordingly, allowing herself all the tools necessary to fill her weekend with whatever pleasure came to mind. The plans had been laid, the stage had been set...And then, Mirabel was contacted by her boss, informed that another was unable to cover their shift for the day, and asked to fill in. Mirabel’s people-pleasing nature overwhelmed her, leaving her unable to say no.
Her elbow rested upon the top of the large, cherry wood desk, back bent as she thumbed through the book open in front of her. Her eyelids were heavy, urging to close, her breathing slowing as sleep threatened to take her. The sound of bells chiming above the door roused her from her state, and she straightened her spine immediately, forcing a smile to her lips. “Good afternoon! Are you in need of a room? Or, is there something else I can help you with?”
