Margaret 6, 12, & 22 for character asks :)
The Character Ask Game
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
We have both been women in a work situation where most of our work colleagues were men - and men who talked of women in strictly sexual terms and openly characterised women as sexually-available not-sexually-available.
Granted, my experience was not in a war zone.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Margaret was lying about needing to borrow $240 for a wedding present for her sister, in Bulletin Board. She was also lying about her mother being a kleptomaniac alcoholic. (I can believe her sister really was getting married.) Margaret just wanted to see if Frank would lend her the money or make excuses: it was an emotional test (and Frank failed). It wasn't a very nice thing to do, but Frank brings out the worst in Margaret.
I also think Margaret lied about her parents both being dead because, alone at the 4077th, she suddenly had responsibility and authority that didn't depend on her dad's friends backing her up: and because I think she likely never got along with her mother, and the growth she has gone through at the 4077th means she won't get along with her father either, whenever she sees her again.
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
Margaret is an excellent nurse: as an officer, she started out inexperienced but certain that military discipline was the best way. She genuinely does not like Hawkeye at all in the early seasons of MASH, just respects him as a surgeon. The first rapprochement between them is at the end of Aid Station - and it's significant that it comes with genuine respect from Hawkeye. Margaret is also enthusiastically heterosexual and attracted to tall, muscular, handsome men. I like stories which take her seriously as a nurse and respect the fact that she had reason to dislike Hawkeye and Trapper initially (and to continue to find Hawkeye frequently obnoxious through the series: he frequently is). I have mixed feelings about Margaret as a lesbian. She is very sweet and affectionate and loyal with her women friends. I can completely see where people who characterise her as a lesbian are coming from. I just... don't see her that way. (Bisexual!Margaret, sure, I can go with that.)
I really don't like stories which take for granted the Hawktrap view of Margaret, that she's an aggressive nuisance to be mocked and dismissed, that any anger or resentment from Margaret is proof her being a shrew with no sense of humour.
when radar tells henry that hawkeye and margaret are back from the front and he says to tell trapper and frank because those are their partners :(
Round 1 | Match 17
Aid Station
Deal Me Out
Aid Station (s3 e19): Hawkeye, Margaret and Klinger make an emergency trip to an aid station at the front lines.
Deal Me Out (s2 e13): A weekly poker game proceeds in spite of Radar accidentally hitting a civilian with a jeep and an enlisted man holding Frank hostage in the showers.
season 3 episode 19
Aid Station really spends a lot of time setting up Hawkeye/Trapper and Klinger/Radar in contrast to Margaret/Frank.
Aid Station Part 2
cant be sure but birthday girls is possibly my fav margaret episode tied with the ever unbelievable bottoms up
