soulmate au + sick/injured fic
ok tbh i love the idea of soulmates having significance other than just sharing heaven. like something on earth as well, if that makes sense? like. their souls are literally connected. the greeks and so many other cultures believe soulmates to be one soul in two bodies. maybe that's why soulless sam wasn't as bad as he could've been – his soul wasn't entirely gone, thanks to dean.
so i have this like, vague headcanon thing that they can actually feel it when the other one's in pain or upset or feeling any other kind of strong emotion. they think it's because they've lived together their entire lives, they're so in-tune with each other – and that's true! but it's also because they've got the same soul in two bodies.
dean instinctively knows when sam's having nightmares, even if sam doesn't make any sound, even if they're in separate rooms. sam always knows when dean's having a bad day/week/month even if dean does his best to pretend he's fine. they can always tell what the other is thinking, and that's why it's so easy for them to have entire conversations without words, just looks and thoughts and feelings that they don't know they're broadcasting.
here's the funny thing. angels know. angels can tell. but not one of them says anything to sam and dean because they're feral about each other as it is. tell them this, and there's no telling what they'll do. cas can hear it sometimes, the thoughts in the space between sam and dean, things they don't know they're sharing, all the words they don't need to say. and he's always torn between jealousy and despair and helplessness, because he'll never have this. he's not built for this. humans may be weak and temperamental but they have souls, and they have soulmates, and isn't that the most wonderful thing?
and sam and dean have no clue how deep it really goes, not until they get to heaven and realize they don't need words here, either. but then again, they never did. the love they've got for each other has always been physical, palpable, a living breathing thing inside their heads and hearts and in between them.
