Controversial or what? Tim Lambesis as I’m sure most people who are interested in the metal field has fronted this band throughout their rise to one of the best technical metalcore bands in the world, until he went to prison, for trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife. Now this has divided the metal community on whether it’s ok to like these guys again. I’m giving them a chance because their music has always been phenomenal. As I Lay Dying formed in 2000 in San Diego, California, who have to date put out 7 full length studio albums. The most recent 3 albums were extremely popular and the band was reaching the peak of their success when Lambesis committed his offence,
So debut single “My Own Grave” - which is their first recording as a band in 6 years - was released a while back and for me that was the first I’d actually heard that the guys had got back together again so it hit me in the face like a house brick, starting off slow and steady giving me goosebumps all over before letting rip that trademark technical riffage alongside growls that would light a fire under the arse of satan himself. That first taste was the spark that lit the fury under me I have been waiting for so long to get my hands on this album; “Blinded” takes us back to the days of “Shadows Are Security” with that opening riff but then powering through with their extreme boxing match between heavy music and melodic music throughout the rest of the track with great skill. “Undertow” opens up the way you would have expected any track from The Powerless Rise album to do, gritty and heavy, it's a basic formula they use but sprinkle on all this technique and skillful writing on top to produce these banging tracks. “Torn Between” is the first track since “My Own Grave” to make a huge impact on me, most particularly through this song and the themes of some of the others you get the feel of seeking redemption and making amends which you can only imagine is the way Lambesis is seeking to move past this saga. “Take What’s Left” is this albums “The Sound Of Truth” and has just as much quality as it to but not as perhaps as big of a sing-a-long factor. “Gatekeeper”, “Redefined” (With Jake Durs of August Burns Red) and “Only After We’ve Fallen” are other songs I want to make a special mention for being beasty as hell.
It's still not their best album, Awakened and The Powerless Rise are superior in my eyes however seeing as they’ve been out of the loop for 6 years and this is their first reconnecting album it's extremely good, I can see them moving forward with this and get back into the swing of performing together which will hopefully lead on to - potentially - the next big metal album. Depending on whether or not you stay with them after the mess that he caused that is.
