Getting to Know...

Aimee deBeer.

Aimee deBeer was born in South Africa, and spent her early childhood living on her father’s sailboat. She currently lives in Los Angeles, having also lived in England, Texas, and New York. She sings with the vocal passion of Lykke Li and the retro dreamy style of Lana del Rey, and writes with the imaginative perspective of Florence Welch.

Aimee has just released her debut EP Who Will Save The Universe?, which features six ultra-vibey tracks including the singles ‘Billboards’ and ‘We Can Keep the Tires Spinning’.

We had a quick chat with Aimee about the EP, her influences, songwriting process and more. Read the Q&A below.

Hi Aimee! How would you describe your sound? Who/what are your influences?

“Hmm.. Immersive is a descriptor I aspire towards- to sonically and lyrically carve out space and create worlds. I think Perfume Genius does a phenomenal job with this. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Nick Cave recently, Connan Mockasin, FKA Twigs, and Frank Ocean. I’ve studied classical music for most of my life - so I’m sure there are bits of that in the sound too.”

What made you want to follow a career in music?

“Feelings. I was an outsider as a child yet had this massive imagination. Music could take me places - it became everything to me.”

You've just released your new EP Who Will Save the Universe? which includes your two previous singles 'Billboards' and 'We Can Keep the Tires Spinning'. What can you tell about the record? What do you hope listeners will take away from it?

“Some of the songs are very old and some were written more recently. They all deal, in one way or another, with the human condition - society, sex, technology... feelings of hope, loss, and the passage of time. I hope to create the type of music I like - music to escape into - music that invites the listener - music that honors mystery. I’d love for my listeners to also see themselves in the songs.”

What's your songwriting process?

“I sit down at the piano almost daily. I also have quite a few other interesting instruments at home. I zone out and sometimes stumble upon something that feels special. The song arrives as I’m unearthing that specialness. Sometimes it’s easy - sometimes it takes a lot of digging.”

Finally, what else does 2019 hold for for Aimee deBeer?

“I hope to keep exploring this life - understanding and creating - playing shows and releasing more tunes!”

The title of Aimee deBeer’s new single reminds me of my ill-fated trip to work late last week, when once again, I found myself having to shell out money for new tires due to yet another flat. But as she sings on the song, “it’s alright, we can keep the tires spinning”. And that’s exactly what I did, because hey, that’s life, right? You roll with the punches, and you look forward to the pleasures in life, like the silvery ringing beauty of this South Africa-born indie pop artist’s gorgeous new tune, We Can Keep The Tires Spinning. The enchanting song, whose bright glassy shards are entwined with shadowy, futuristic electronic production, will be featured on Aimee’s debut EP, ‘Who Will Save The Universe?’, out June 14th. "This EP revolves around reconciling oneself with uncertainty," Aimee explains. "The act of walking into the unknown can be both terrifying and exhilarating; soul crushing and marvelous. As humans, we develop countless coping mechanisms in the effort to both squash and defend our vulnerability. This EP provides a space where, even just for a few minutes, an alternative reality becomes accessible and a space to shed all armor is found.”
