-On December 26th, Jack Johnson became the first black boxer to win the Heavyweight Boxing Championship after he knocked out reigning champion Tommy Burns.
-King Edward VII (son of Queen Victoria) dies on May 6th, after only being King for 9 years. The Royal Family referred to him as ‘Bertie’.
1912-
-Titanic hits an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic on April 14th, after being described as unsinkable. The voyage was from Southampton to New York. The sinking of the ship resulted in the loss of more than 1500 lives.
1913-
-Mona Lisa is recovered in Florence after theft from Paris 2 years before.
1914-
-Start of World War One. On June 28th Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria attended a military review, during his visit he and his wife were killed by Gavrilo Princip, a nationalist that wanted the Austro-Hungarian Empire out of Bosnia.
1915-
-First Transcontinental Telephone Call was made in New York to San Francisco.
1917-
-British Royal Family change their name. George V changed the name to a German sounding name. Royal House of Windsor.
1918-
-Royal Air Force is founded in England. The aircraft in use in 1918 when the RAF started included the Sopwith Pup, Bristol F2B Fighters, Sopwith Camels and Royal Aircraft Factory SE5's.
1919-
-US congress approves daylight savings time. Many countries followed Germany to the use of DST.
-First pop up toaster was invented by Charles Strite. The toaster used heated electrical coils to toast bread
