Recycle research. This image shows a cassette tape in an abandoned building. This is possibly showing that the time of the cassette tapes are over just like this building. It fits in with the background as they contrast in both colour and texture. This is due to the matte smooth texture of the tape compared to the wall peelings that are rugged. The green of the wall peelings complement the red in the tape.
Seeing the light task 1: Researching a portrait photographer - Milos Nejezchleb
Milos Nejezchleb is a Czech portraiture photographer who has won several international rewards, despite only focusing on conceptual photography for five years. Nejezchleb shows through his work that he really enjoys playing with the element of colour, so much so that it has become a tell-tale element in his photos that lets us, the viewers, know that it is his work. As well as his interesting use of colour, Milos Nejezchleb composes his pictures in very unique ways, including the posing of his models which is almost doll-like.
Nejezchleb has shot for Vogue and was titled one of the best modern photographers of January 2020. His photographs are certainly not your run-of-the-mill portraits, most people would describe his style of photography as “odd” or “unique”, the most interesting part of his style to me personally being the way he poses his models as if they are figurines with neutral facial expressions, giving him a blank human canvas for all the other elements he wishes to add to his images.
Milos Nejezchleb currently has a long-term ongoing photographic series titled “Stronger” in which he takes photos of people who have been through extremely difficult situations that have ultimately made them stronger. The images above depict the story of a woman named Katka who tragically lost her mother at the age of 18, and then took on the responsibility of caring for her younger brother. Katka then discovered that her husband, the father of her child was a rapist and fled from him with her son to preserve their safety. One afternoon her husband found her and shot her twice before turning the gun on himself, and after extensive surgeries, Katka recovered and remarried. However, her second marriage eventually ended in divorce which led to her second ex-husband committing suicide, doing so by using the gun that he originally bought to protect Katka. Nejezchleb was able to depict this entire heart wrenching story in just a couple of photographs, which is one of the main reasons why I and so many others are fascinated by his work.
Each of his photographs tell a different story in such a unique and bold way, so intimate in meaning yet so void of vulnerability visually due to the lack of facial expression and human-like natural poses.
