#jeeadvanced #iit #education #successstory #students

So there is this video that I watch at least once a year of a slide show of defunct United States airlines of the 1980s. It's set to a soothing song, and its about one of my favorite subjects: flops. Some of these airlines almost seemed like by fly by night operations, some even had similar names to major carriers:
I mean....although I love that pink Northwestern plane with the clouds on it. Reminds me of Cathy comics for some reason.
One however caught my eye because of its futuristic name, and its short time as an airline. Also, I'm not going to play around, but the 1 on the tail reminds me of the old Monistat 1 packaging:
Anyway, from what I can gather Air 1 was an airline that was one of many that came out of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and that tried to cater to business travelers. The first Air 1 flight took off in April of 1983 from its home airport in St. Louis to New York City. The Boeing 727s (9 in all) the airline leased from PanAm were arranged in an all first class format with 80 leather seats (from old Braniff planes) instead of the usual 119 seats. 1 There was even a report of to and from limo drives from Newark, New Jersey to Manhattan. 3 Meals were served on china with a warm towel for "his hands". 1
Flights only took off on weekdays and Saturday Mornings. A flight from St. Louis to New York was about $242. 1 The employees were non union so that's why flights were so cheap. 5
You know who also had a hub in St. Louis? TWA:
T.W.A., for example, yesterday announced cuts in its fares between Newark and St. Louis because a new carrier, Air 1, is charging deeply discounted prices to promote its new service. Air 1 began flying last Friday. 2
Guess how much money they lost in 1983? $21 million. 4 It had lost $40.2 million since 1981, when the airline was first organized. The planes also flew one-third full. In October of 1984, the airline filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and ceased flights. 5
I can't wait to get into more of these rinky dink short lived airlines.
