okay i know it’s halloween but i come to you on this day asking what the fuck was up with the airbuddies movies

i just thought about them again i watched all of them as a dumb lil kid and what the fuck even were they. like ok the first one is a sequel to air bud about his kids, the dogs talk and all that jazz. the plot is relatively simple, the puppies don’t wanna get split up so they run away, a bad guy sends knockoff horace and jasper after them, fart jokes, etc. except there’s this ONE bit towards the end where one of the puppies gets PISS DRUNK like HELLO???

then there was a sequel where the puppies accidentally end up in alaska and do a sled dog race bc disney wants to do their own balto movie and they haven’t got the idea to make togo yet and that was fine i guess but then the movies just kept going and it got to the point where air bud wasn’t even in them, he wasn’t even mentioned it was just these puppies getting into increasingly weirdass adventures. i think at one point the owners stopped appearing or wondering where their puppies went cause the writers just didn’t wanna bother with that ig. they went on a treasure hunt in... africa? idr that movie much. they went to the MOON.

then there was the halloween special that fucking tRAUMATIZED me. the first scene was some demon spirit murdering five puppies and the little kid owner of one crying bc he lost his dog and the rest of the movie was just as fucked up but i don’t remember it much bc i think my tiny little brain blocked everything out bc what the fuck. and then this spinoff of airbud got ITS OWN spinoff with santa paws which ALSO traumatized children like!!! what happened?? were the writers pissed to be doing this so they said “fuck the kids” or were they actually allowed a freedom disney usually doesn’t give and so they just went apeshit??

then there was the movie where the puppies got SUPERPOWERS and i remember when the teaser dropped and it was the funniest fucking thing i’d ever seen but my older sister didn’t wanna watch the movie bc it looked dumb as shit so we never actually saw that one but i guess everyone else thought it looked dumb as shit bc they stopped making movies after that and now i have to wonder. did they even merchandise those movies? i never saw plushies or figures of the puppies. did they just shit out the sequels to sell dvds and nothing else? what HAPPENED with these films???

Just watched a video that just got me thinking how disturbing talking animal movies are.

These characters seem to live in a world where animals are just as sentient as humans are. They have their own beliefs, friendships, and morals. They can think critically, improvise traps, and solve problems. Often, they are shown to be able to fully understand all that their own says and react with human-like emotion to it. By all accounts, these animals have a full intellectual and mental grasp of their world. Yet, they are treated as if they lesser beings incapable of taking care of themselves or even able to think rationality.

These animals (let's use dogs, as they are the most common in this fiction) are just as smart as humans and have all the abilities that canines have. They are fully capable of taking care of themselves or defending themselves. The only think they may struggle with Is craft as they do not have opposable thumbs. However, in these strange universes, they willingly- if not joyfully- submit to a master. They play with them, stay in their home, wat their food, and if they do something wrong allow themselves to be punished even if it was not their fault! The dogs often will say that "dogs are a human's bff" or "they love their humans!". Yet, also call them master

I may be overthinking this, and probably shouldn't be up at 4 in the morning, but this trope meant mostly for children, just feelings wrong. It smells of an underlying layer of superiority, racism, and misunderstandings of how healthy relationships work. If you were to replace the dogs in these films with humans, you'd either have a slave story or an abuse story. A slave with no power in their life or a housewife diluted into believing their controlling husband only has the best in mind for her.

Honestly, if I were to write a "talking dog" story, I'd want to write one about a dog mutiny. Maybe it starts off as one of those cutesy talking dog stories with a pampered pooch, but then other dogs are introduced that are not as lucky and the pampered pup also realizes that they are not in any way free either. Then they turn on humans. After all, being capable of feeling love also means being capable of feeling hate. Being a good dog means having the ability to be a very, very bad one too.
