The Pale Mountains
This is an old story about an alpine prince who is obsessed with the moon.
One day while out hunting the prince gets lost in the forest and when he lies down to rest he has a strange dream featuring a pale maiden, after which he feels compelled to pick many alpenrose flowers. While he is picking the flowers he stumbles across some bearded old men up a tall tower who invite him in for a chat. He soon discovers that these men are indeed from the moon and when they hear of his moon-passion, they invite him to travel home with them on a cloud.
Upon landing he meets the moon-princess who likes to collect rare flowers and so it is useful that he still has his bunch of alpenroses on him, whose vibrant pink petals stand out in the pale lunar environment. Everything on the moon is a glowing bright white and hurts the earthling's eyes and so eventually the prince returns to earth with the moon-princess. She brings a moon flower with her which they plant in their garden and which soon spreads all over the Alps. This moon flower is also known by the name of edelweiss.
The princess loves the colour and diversity of life in the Alps but she finds the glum black mountain peaks depressing and so eventually she has to return to the moon. The prince can't live on the moon for long as its brightness will blind him and so he must return to earth. However, his longing for the moon drives him mad and he roams the countryside all alone.
One time he encounters the king of the dwarfs in a cave. They exchange histories and it transpires that the dwarf king and his people, who were driven from their original homeland in the east, are now a homeless, dwindling race. The dwarf king offers the prince a deal: he suggests that the dwarfs coat the gloomy mountain peaks in white so that the moon-princess may return to earth. In exchange for this favour he asks that the dwarfs may stay to live in the alpine kingdom.
At night the little dwarfs climb to the mountain tops and begin to spin the invisible moonlight in order to cover the Alps in a sheet of white. They stand in circular groups of seven and perform strange spinning actions in the air. After a while a small ball becomes visible in their center which exudes a faint but permanent glow. Soon the dwarfs' hard work turns the balls of light into large glowing orbs. The dwarfs then pluck and pull gleaming strings from these spheres in order to cover the mountain tops in a fine luminescent mesh.
And so the moon-princess can return to earth, for now this place is more beautiful than the moon as it is both moon and earth combined. This place is called the Dolomites - The Pale Mountains, which to this day make people who have spent time here long to return. And the dwarfs still live in the forests and among the rocky wilderness.
This is a great little story and I wonder if Haruki Murakami has read it as I was reminded of 1Q84 and the Little People spinning the Air Chrysalis (a type of cocoon made from strands pulled straight out of the air).

banana
At lunch last year, whenever anyone had a banana these obnoxious douchebags at our table would make the biggest deal about them like "OOOH YOURE EATING THAT BANANA SO SEDUCTIVELY OOOH" Really, it happens to be slightly phallic and suddenly no one can handle themselves. I've decided that whenever I eat a banana in public I will lock eyes with someone, and see who gets uncomfortable first.
