Kyōraku Shunsui- Sakura Blossom- renewal, hope, and the transience of life
You sighed in content as your head laid on his bare chest. The steady beat of his heart and small rumbles of laughter brought relief to your anxious heart. The war with the Quincy was over, your beloved had returned home. The night was spent lying in blankets by the open windows of the bedroom in your shared estate, the sweet smell of spring hung in the air. Your body felt content and safe, even if the anxious thoughts led to rumination.
“Is something wrong, dear?” Shunsui’s voice spoke as he turned his head to face you, you had sat up, peeling off Sakura petals from him that had come through the open windows.
“No, it’s just- “you stopped, eyes transfixed on his handsome face. From the strong brow to the curl of his hair, you could gaze at him for an eternity and never grow tired. Yet your thumb reached out to trace the faint scar tissue over where his eye was, no, should have been. Your heart clenched at that, the fear from the day he returned home with an eyepatch still sat in your stomach. Your heart felt heavy at all the times your fingers danced over new scars and lips kissed purple bruises. His eye followed you, frowning at the phantom pain your touch evoked before he spoke, “Now love, lets focus on the moment.”
“You’re right. I apologize, it’s just- “you picked another petal from his skin. Yes, it was still warm, it still held his floral musk. You felt your heart swell, delighted at the thought of him still being alive after everything. How the man before you still stood strong after all his loss, his heart never growing cold. He still came home to you, pressing kisses to your lips with praises of thankfulness. Words of adoration and passion, for he would always return home to you.
Your voice was caught in your throat once more when he grabbed your hand. He plucked the pink soft petal from your fingertips and tucked it into the palm of your hand. You were transfixed, watching his storm-colored eye never move from your own as he brought your knuckles to his lips. He took time kissing each knuckle, tickling your skin with his facial hair and stroking them with his own thumb. He hummed at the lustful look in your eyes, the flush to your cheeks, “Let us spend the night with other thoughts in mind, my love.” You could only nod in agreement as he caressed your body once more, happiness bloomed in your heart. Yes, the fighting was over, it was time for new beginnings.
Kenpachi Zaraki- Orange Orchid- boldness, pride and success
You peered up over your easel, looking at the figures in front of you. Strong arms and legs, a clash of bokken hitting one another in the dojo. You were painting figures in action for your latest art gallery in the Seretei, you thought no better place to study would be the private dojo of the Eleventh Division. Yachiru peered up at you from her place in your lap, watching you paint. A sly grin on her face as she spoke, “Isn’t Kenny doing great?”
You grunted in response, eyes peering up again to look at your boyfriend, Zaraki Kenpachi. The relationship was fresh, born from your brother being in the Eleventh and you needing somewhere to practice for your gallery. It was one evening you had come to the dojo, the last rays of sun shining through the window accentuating his features- raven black hair, muscular toned body and a feral grin that had caused your heart to beat erratic. He had become your muse in that moment, it was then you boldly asked, “Will you be my boyfriend?”
The boisterous laugh with a smile in your direction would be a memory forever engrained on your soul.
You now spend most of your time here, between the teasing of Ikkaku and Yumichika, painting the object of your affection. Yachiru twirled the orange orchid you had brought from your private garden in her small hands, eyes shining at the progress of your latest work, “If you keep drawing Kenny, you’ll make the rest of us jealous!”
A shadow eclipsed you then as Zaraki peered over your easel, the sweat that dripped off of him running through your paint. You clenched your jaw at that, watching your work sullied. It was when he snatched the orchid from Yachiru’s small hands with a quizzical look asking, “What the hell is this?”, that you snapped.
“A flower you oaf!” you retorted, and the dojo fell silent. Your usual calm demeanor turning into one of anger, something that only Zaraki brought out in you. How he loved it when you yelled at him, challenged him with a quick wit and slurry of insults.
He glared down at you, “Why the hell did you bring such an ugly thing to my dojo, huh? You tryna’ pick a fight?”
“Oh, you wouldn’t know beauty if it struck you in the face, Zaraki!”
He had ruined your painting with his sweat and now here he was crushing the flower you wanted to give him between scarred fingers. You stood then in haste before speaking, getting on your tip toes infront of him.
“I feel you’re trying to piss me off today. Why can’t you just be a good subject and get back to training!?” you hissed. He grinned down at you, enjoying the anger in your eyes, your usually calm demeanor in shambles from so few words. It was then you felt it, his warm lips pressing a kiss to your forehead. They lingered for a moment as hand tucked the flower behind your ear.
“I don’t need flowers, I have you.” His words led to a gaudy applause from the men in the room with hoops and hollers praising their captain. You couldn’t stop the flush on your cheeks as you made your way back behind your easel sitting down in silence, your knees felt too weak to stand any longer.
“You heard her, get back to training! Give her a real show!” he ruffled your hair before turning back to the men. His gentle touch had you pressing a hand to your forehead, savoring the feeling. Oh yes, you were but an artist with their muse even if that muse was currently throwing his men wildly around the dojo.
Ichimaru Gin- Snapdragon- grace, strength, andsometimes deviousness
“Whatcha got there?” a serpentine figure leaned over you as your ran your hands along the tops of stems and petals walking along the field full of yellows and pinks. It was a beautiful spring afternoon, sometimes you snuck out from Captain Aizen’s careful gaze out to the Rukongai districts. The longing for moments of quiet had led you to this field, even though a snake had followed.
“Snapdragons,” you responded idly, tracing a finger along the curves of the blossoms, squishing the little face of the flower between a forefinger and thumb. You had no idea how they had ended up in the Soul Society, but you were grateful to see something so familiar from your past life, nonetheless.
“You like ‘em?” Gin leaned closer, his foxlike grin curling upwards in your face once you turned to face him. “Not really. They just remind me of someone…” you continued your walk, unconcerned with his teasing as he kept pace with you.
“Oh yeah? Remind ya of who?” genuine curiosity gave him away causing you to grin. “It’s a secret. You know what those are right, Lieutenant Ichimaru?” his smile fell a smidge at your question, his unshifting eyes never telling you the truth, he remained silent as you both continued to walk.
You felt it then, the burning sting of a bee grazing your finger and a hiss escaped your lips as you pulled away cradling your forefinger. “Uh oh, see what happens when yah don’t share?” Gin’s smile widened at the tears that threatened your eyes from the sting, you bit your lip not responding as you brought your finger to your lips to suck the stinger out.
Before you could, however, a slim hand snatched your own. Thin cool lips wrapped around your finger as Gin sucked on the sting. You gasped in surprise at such an act, at how crystalline blue eyes met yours. A flush worked a way up to your cheeks; he hummed at that, watching with a predatory eye. You shivered, wondering how such a strong and graceful man could be so deceptive. He let go as soon as he was satisfied with your reaction, lacing his hands behind his head once more.
“Will ya tell me now~?” he teased as you looked the other way. You did not respond, not trusting the words that may spill from your lips if you opened them. You continued walking, picking up the pace and leaving him behind in the field. A small smile forming as you brought your finger to your lips.
“Aw yer no fun!” he called out after you. While you’d never truly understand Gin you could enjoy these small moments together.
Izuru Kira- Blue Hydrangea- apology, forgiveness, and regret
“What are you doing?” An exasperated sigh could be heard behind you.
“Saving the hydrangeas!” you exclaimed, raising your voice to reach over the rain. It was a humid summer day in the Third Division gardens. A day where the rain brought reprieve, cool droplets against your warm sweat soaked skin. It made no difference how your hair clung to your cheeks or how your shihakusho was muddy and soaked through. No, you were on a mission. Albeit a bit selfish one.
“What, why!?” Lieutenant Kira Izuru said, the wagasa above his head created a shadow that accentuated the dark circles under his eyes. How many days have you watched now? Watching him in despair as Gin Ichimaru left the Third without a trace, his betrayal ran deep in the lieutenant. Yet, Izuru still carried on. Carried on the duties of a man absent of a leader, filling in the roles he was never trained for. Many nights you caught him up late still working on documents while the rest of the division slept, this task in the garden was nothing compared to what he had done.
“Let me shoulder some of your burdens Lieutenant,” you spoke, pulling at the weeds. The gardens had fallen into ruin; the persimmon tree did not bear fruit. The flowers hung their heads; the weeds and vines overtook the roots of the hydrangeas causing them to no longer bloom. Your hands burnt where you ripped, determination between your shoulder blades as you tugged. Kira had no need to feel such guilt for his actions. It was something set in motion prior to him ever joining the Third Division or Shino Academy, no one blamed him, yet he still shouldered it.
“What are you talking about!? How is helping the hydrangeas going to help me?” He huffed, staring down at you, watching how you smiled even with mud and bits of leaves covering you. “Because they remind me of you, they make me want to show my gratitude for all you’ve done for us as the Third. For the peace you’ve brought us amongst the chaos and your perseverance in the storm,” you responded in a matter-of-fact tone, gazing up at him.
The flush rising up his neck to the tips of his ears was not missed as he turned away, pretending to cough. The rain stopped then, the wagasa extended over your head, the downpour drowning out whatever words he was saying.
“Huuuh? What? I can’t hear you, Lieutenant!” you cupped a hand to your ear, straining to hear something. He crouched next you then, the flush still evident but a small smile on his face, “So…how do we help the hydrangeas?”
“Glad you asked, I-zu-ru!” you giggled as he grumbled about your teasing. While you could not bear all the burdens you could help him rebuild his own bit of happiness.
Ukitake Jūshirō- Plum Blossom- resilience, perseverance, and the beauty of life blooming even in harsh conditions
The twilight of late winter brought out the twinkling of stars as you looked above towards the sky. Your breath left your lips in the form of white clouds as they ascended into the branches of the plum blossom. The light snow fall swirled around you both as you walked, Jushiro holding your hand tightly, providing warmth to the tips of your fingers.
“Is something wrong, my sweet?” His voice dripped with such affection as he gazed down at you, reaching to wrap the shawl tighter around your form. “I just worry for you in this cold is all…” your voice trailed off. Even in small moments his health remained the forefront of your worries, you were an apothecary by trade and while you lived to serve everyone who needed it - you wished for nothing more than to find a cure for your husband.
“Don’t now, let’s enjoy the night. The sweet smell of blossoms is as much of a luxury as is the peaceful time we now share.” His words rang true, you smiled up at him as you continued to walk. Yes, how you enjoyed the small reprieve, moments to joke and share. Outward affections hidden in the privacy of the tree trunk. His hands wandering to your hips and chest, his lips pressed firmly against any skin shown.
You were grateful to have such a gracious lover, it brought hope to you that this would last well into the future. An unknown inevitable with the Captain of the Thirteenth Division. You caressed his cheek as he leaned down to kiss your forehead, your nose, your cheek. A giggle erupted from your lips, “Jushiro stop! It tickles!”
“Should I kiss elsewhere…?” his pupils were dark and large as he gazed down at you, a flush to his usually pale skin. You felt shy at that, at such outward lust and love. Your stomach flipped when he wrapped an arm around your waist pulling you closer into the mess of roots at the base of the tree. His hands were calloused from years of battle yet his heart remained tender, how blessed you were to have his affections you thought.
“I think my lips may suffice,” your voice shook with nerves as you batted your lashes back up at him. He grinned cupping your cheek and meeting your lips with his own. You both moaned at the passion, how his tongue danced along yours his hands holding you from slipping away. Yes, how blessed you were to have a man with such perseverance and resilience even with frail health. The future he would help shape for the Soul Society was one of purity and grace, you clutched him tighter as his passions grew more intense in the forest. You knew then that you would never let him go.
Hirako Shinji- Sunflower- joy, happiness, and loyalty
“C’mon Shinji, say cheese!” you exclaimed, only taking the selfie when he showed off a toothy smile. You were glad to have the day off from work, to be able to go on a date with your boyfriend and even happier there was a sunflower field just outside Karakura Town.
You tugged him through the rows of sunflowers; bright petals turned to the clear sky and light breeze of the summer day. The smell was intoxicating, especially when you could share it with your beloved. “C’mon babe don’t pull me too hard now, lets enjoy the view,” Shinji spoke, clutching his hat as you tugged him along, excitement overtaking you. How could you not feel such excitement? This may be the last date you have with him, he would be returning to his position as captain of the Fifth Division once more. Who would you gossip with? Rummage through record stores with? Share all your meals with? There was a selfish ache in your heart that not even the brightness of a sunflower could outshine. No, you would miss him, but you understood his responsibility and the shadows he carried with him. Not even you could erase those.
You finally stopped at the edge of the field, sweat on your brow and huffing slightly from the sprint. Your lungs burned, your throat hurt, and tears dared to form in your eyes as you thought it over.
“Hey now…” Shinji began, “What’s gotten into yah?”
You couldn’t face him, you couldn’t stand to make this the last day you had together, but you sniffled nonetheless before beginning your speech. “You just remind me of a sunflower yah know? You always stand so strong in the face of adversity, you always have. While I may not know everything, I do know you’re a good man Shinji Hirako and I am glad for our time together even if…” your voice broke as you dropped his hand. How foolish of me to be crying in a field of sunflowers, you thought.
Arms enveloped you from behind, the warmth of his chest on your back and a breathless laugh in your ear, “Worried ol’ Shinji gonna just up and leave huh? Nah you’re my girl now, no matter what.”
Your heart hammered in your chest as he spoke on, “Glad to see you think of me so highly though, means a lot. Really.”
You nodded, pulling out of his grasp so you could hug him back, breathing in his scent mixed with the summer sun. “Thought you were gonna say I’m tall and slender or somethin’” he mumbled after a moment. You laughed at that, “Yeah you might break with a strong wind!”
He laughed too, “You know what’s never gonna break? These hips baby-Ow!”, he grumbled as you playfully smacked him on the chest. Yes, you’d miss your loving loyal idiot.
Aizen Sōsuke- Red Rose- love, beauty, and passion
“Is something wrong?” his eyes met yours in the shadows as you stared at the object of your awe. A single rose had bloomed miraculously within Hueco Mundo. You had only seen it in one of his books before you had departed, in passing you mentioned it, and now here it was in your grasp.
“It’s just so beautiful.” You twirled the flower between your fingers, ran the petals over your lips. It smelled otherworldly compared to the cold and arid smell that permeated Las Noches.
“Not as beautiful as you,” Aizen twirled a lock of your hair in his hand, his eyes drifting elsewhere though he lay bare next to you. You would not be jealous, you had chosen this path from the start, back when Shinji Hirako was your captain and you a girl with eyes for the lieutenant. You would follow Sosuke Aizen anywhere, even into the deserts of Hueco Mundo. You had thrown it all away for the smidge of his affections and he had graced you with countless nights of passion.
Your eyes momentarily left the flower to gaze upon him in all his perfections. Defined muscles and flawless skin, his handsome face wore a smirk at your lechery. Amusement danced in the pools of his eyes, the moonlight capturing his divine form. Your body grew warm once more, an ache that neither your mind or body could stop. He plucked the rose from your grasp then, bringing to his own nose. He a small sigh of pleasure escaped his lips, “Do you know the language of flowers, my love?” he raised a brow as you shook your head.
He told you then, between tender caresses to your body with that rose. Your skin growing gooseflesh as he outlined his lust in pretty words and poetry. Spoke of foreign nations and histories. Between your legs, grasping plush thighs, he schooled you in all the meanings of a rose. Passion, beauty and love. Your heart clenched as you met him readily, your lips dripping salacious moans of worship and praise.
He laid back once more, pulling you towards him, “You are mine, correct?”
You nodded in earnest; he still held the rose in his hands as he grazed your skin once more. The flower trailed from your stomach to the swell of your breasts before meeting your lips.
“Remember this about roses my love- “his husky voice a sadistic whisper in your ear, you felt it then with a gasp. A thorn had grazed your kiss swollen lips.
“-they all have thorns.” he kissed your neck, working his way back down your body. The tenderness of the wound melting into pleasure once more. Yes, soon you will come to realize just how sharp thorns can be.
