Character ask: Sharon Carter?

Sharon Carter

How I feel about this character–Woefully uninformed, to be honest. Sharon as a character goes back much farther than I’ve read Captain America. But what I know from what I have read is that she’s a force of nature, with nerves of steel, and that you do not want to underestimate her.

All the people I ship romantically with this character–Steve, because they have a connection, because they care about each other so much and are so in tune with each other.

My non-romantic OTP for this character–Natasha and Sam. (It’s pretty obvious that most of my Sharon knowledge comes from Brubaker, right? Oh, well.)

My unpopular opinion about this character–Is it an unpopular opinion that MCU Sharon didn’t steal her great-aunt’s man or whatever?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon–She hasn’t seen any action in the Marvel Universe since Secret Empire ended, right? So I guess what I want is for her to get back into the field.

A lot of people seem to dislike him but I agree with you. He’s a pretty cool character with an intriguing personality and he thinks differently to the people on Coulson’s team which provides a different point of view.

well i mean, i get why people don’t like him, he’s someone who doesn’t get along with the team, he’s not selflessly helpful or all smiles and nice to the team - it’s easy to then dislike someone who doesn’t treat your favorite characters and heroes the way you think they should be treated, easy to hate and dislike when that someone goes against your faves’ ideas and actions

but the reality is that deke doesn’t know this team so why would he treat a bunch of strangers like they’re jesus walking on water, you know? they’re nothing to him, they’re a bunch of random people whom since showing up has literally done everything to draw attention to themselves and stir up trouble that he’s spent his whole life trying not to do - deke reacts the way most people would react when strangers invade their home and start fucking things up, so he’s not nice or polite and will drop them if his survival and his home are under threat

we as viewers are conditioned to side with our heroes because we know them and we love them, deke is an easy target because the show has made him the foil - he’s not the hero of the story, we don’t know him, we haven’t followed his storyline for years so our sympathies would always align more with the team than with deke, providing the debate and tension - it’s more than fair to say that if this had been a show where the future people on earth were the main characters and we saw them for five years on screen and suddenly a group of random people show up and start stirring up trouble, we’d be siding with deke and understanding his position

and really, this is not the first time that viewers have been set up to dislike a character because they’re a foil who doesn’t easily let the team just have their way - victoria hand, gonzales, the real shield group, talbot, even mace just recently in season 4 - it’s natural to wanna side with your heroes and it’s hard to consider anyone who doesn’t give your heroes what they want to be anything other than someone you should dislike

7. Favorite author

Meredith Duran. She writes historical romance, and she is insanely talented. Her books are emotional and exciting, well-plotted and researched, with rich characterization and even richer language. And she subverts all the tropes, but she does it in such a natural way that it never reads as preachy. There’s one book of hers which I didn’t love as much as the others because I felt that the heroine didn’t get enough agency, but it’s an exception to the rule.

30. Favorite line you’ve ever written

This is a hard one, since my writing style relies too much on banter for me to be able to point to a single line, but I do like this one (from Who Do You Think You Are):

Natasha’s had it with the greater good lately, sick of people missing the trees for the forest, of good people being sacrificed to prevent bad PR.

Also, imagining Bucky saying “I couldn’t win back a yo-yo” (from the same fic) makes me laugh.

48. Favorite genre to write in

Slice-of-life comes most naturally to me, but when I feel like pushing myself, adventure is nice.
