I have so many things I should actually be drawing haha, but seems like today was the day of this - according to the file name - chonky bastard. It was inspired by this post and the conversation I had with @draconesmundi (whose main blog Tumblr doesn’t let me tag because of course it doesn’t) afterwards.
Basically this creature is aitvaras, a Baltic mythological rooster dragon. The Finnish version of it is called ajattara, although in the true Finnish fashion our mythology regarding the creature is extremely messy, which is why ajattara has been described as many things from a witch to a nature spirit or even a goddess as well as some sort of draconic being. But because the word was likely derived from the same source as aitvaras, in this case they are considered being two words for the same creature.
Aitvaras is often described as pitch black rooster that has a fiery tail and some oddly draconic traits. The version on the left here is more or less based on this cockatrice illustration and on the right side is my own interpretation of the creature. In both cases I depicted the thing that people thought as a fire-red tail as an appendage positioned around where the animal’s tail would be if it was an actual rooster. After all if this thing was hiding in a flock of chickens you’d only see the uppermost part of it, while the real tail is positioned much lower. The red parts are also described as being able to (be set in fire, but if we tone that down a bit) change color when the critter gets agitated, which makes me think that maybe the red parts change color during mating season while the creature is also more aggressive.
