For once, her assignment wasn’t total bullshit. Echo Springs was famous for its goddamn bullshit. The most exciting thing she’d covered in the last year was the blood drive where the police chief passed out. (She enjoyed that for a multitude of reasons... and definitely captured more than one snapshot.) But today, there was actual news happening.
Not that she expected any answers from this press conference. The mayor was supposed to come out in a little while, say his bit and reassure everyone. But all anyone wanted to know was who — who were the bodies being found? And who was putting them in the woods?
She had arrived early, far too early, in an effort to avoid getting crowded in. But now she felt the bodies pressing in around her, and she sucked in a breath that felt lacking in oxygen. Jessica clenched her jaw, kept her camera close to her chest so that it wouldn’t get knocked by an errant elbow. The wind picked up, cutting through her jacket and hood, blowing some of her stray hairs to the side. “Christ,” she muttered. “They could’ve held this shit inside. It’s goddamn March, not May.”
