Locked in by magic

For prompt from @flashfictionfridayofficial​. A evening party, where mages are imprisoned under the disguise of nice clothes with the help of enslaving runes. Wip intro

The rune on my wrist is burning hot.

Itchy and red, as the intent bound with magic is charged with my energy. These runes are a twisted thing.

They imprison mages, yet allow the gaoler to act like a host.

Just like my father is right now.

It’s still weird to call him father. He was always “sir” to me, the boss, the leading authority. The one who decides your fate, but stays only to watch from afar.

Observer. Researcher. It never irked me as it does now.

I always wanted to be invited to one of these special evenings though. Always hated Kye for being the eternal guest star, the one father presented to the world as his son, his successor.

The suit feels weird. Too tight and restricting, too formal for someone like me. The long sleeves hide the scars on the forearms, but they don’t reach till the wrists to hide the rune if I don’t button them. I consider it for a second, but then leave it. I won’t be playing this game that accurately.

Enough that I’m wearing a tie for them.

Forcing my way through the crowds of well-dressed people, I head over to the only faces I recognise.

Casey looks well in his suit, casually opened at the collar. He is a natural, fits right in with all those wealthy pampered people. Which is strange, since he spend the last few years in a forest hunting wild animals for dinner.

But he has that annoying grin on his face as always.

Kyler on the other hand, looks like he has been born with a suit. Perfect to the finest detail and elegant with the capital E. He is serious and calm looking, moving with self-assured smoothness of someone who has done this countless of times.

Hiding very well just how different this time is.

Casey’s left wrist is slightly rolled up, but his right is strictly buttoned down, the only part of his clothes that is flawlessly standard. He manages to make everything a bit more his, trying to stick out the crowd.

It’s where the rune is, I assume.

I am the thorne in the eye here, the one never invited, just another clone that normally knows his place, one that has been given special honor today.

Kyler is the chosen clone, the one making our “father” his human image.

But Casey is a prisoner, cut from his magic by the rune that feeds of it. Using a mage’s own power to lock them in like this is the worst possible humiliation, the biggest show of dominance.

But here we all are, acting like we are all guests on a scheduled party. All these people are the most prominent celebrities, everyone here means something.

In other words, everyone here decides the fates of those that aren’t here, fighting their battles for them, while they play with lives like with pieces on a chessboard. Outwitting and laughing in embarrassment or triumph as they sacrifice or lose their pieces.

Casey is a war prize.

Kyler is the exhibitory horse.

And I’m the piece that has the rare access to see behind the stage.

But the real trophy of the evening is Acacia.

Coming through the entrance in a long blue sparkling evening dress, that beautifully underlines her figure, her hair in a intricate braid pulled up, she looks stunning. Holding her head high, one wouldn’t believe she was screaming herself horse just a few hours ago.

What truly shows her significance are the long white gloves reaching up until her elbows.

The runes needed to subdue her, covered yet so obvious for everyone in the room. This is her display of power in a way too.

Her face lights up a notch, when she notices her brother between us, though she keeps at her slow graceful pace.

Casey puffs his chest out, all humor of the evening forgotten, once his sister is in sight. The way the two take comfort just from seeing each other never stops amazing me.

Kyler looks the same as he did, not a muscle moving on his face, but he turns slightly to be steered in her direction.

The four of us don’t talk. We don’t have anything to say that all these people wouldn’t find suspicious and threatening. Even standing together like this risks wrath of my father. For Acacia the most of course. But she chooses the risk by standing between us, and none of us has the right or the will to deny her that proximity. That she can still stand, tall and proud like this, is a miracle.

Kyler positions himself in front of me and Casey, to intercept any curious and daring enough to approach. Keeping his answers perfectly polite, like a good mediator, like a satisfied son. I’m not sure if he does this to spare us the trouble of talking to these disgusting frauds, or if he doesn’t want to risk me or Casey ruining the evening by flying off the handle.

Casey is close to it several times, when someone comments on his sister’s beauty, origin or dress.

I bump into him, when he balls his fists in anger to distract him, but he has to hold me by the elbow a few times too, when someone has the audacity to talk about the war. About our sitution. About the rogue mages in the forest.

Kyler is always there to answer anything before we can, truly acting like the older noble brother on behalf of two emotional younger ones.

But we are still all caged, locked in this illusion of civility and fake brightness.

Our bond the only real thing, invisibly vibrating between us.
