Not a Fairy Godmother

Reina is a badass. Kiyoshi and Akira both know this about their mom. She's lived a life of defying fae expectations, of following her own instincts. She should have left Kiyoshi in the mortal realm, traded him for Akira in the way all changelings are traded. She should have treated Akira as more of a toy or a pet, because he's human. But instead, she took the human baby and kept her own and raised them both equally. She's taught them how to fight and survive and be clever and brave. She's received a lot of judgment for it and never once backed down. Her sons know she's badass for all of these reasons.

They have no idea how badass she actually is. Before she was their mom, she was a court spy and assassin for Calix, the fae in charge of her court, and she was good at her job. She held a high title and a lot of respect. And her previous life is the reason she's been able to do what she wants now. Another court might have exiled her for her choices, but Calix has let her be, has even offered her her job back. He can't make the court be nice to her. He can't protect her kids from their own poor choices (and neither can she). But he can remind her this is still her home. So she's stayed and done her best with what she has.

Akira is absolutely a fruit-in/on-cakes kind of person, especially a strawberry short cake. Lemon-blueberry, pineapple upside-down, and banana cream cakes are also up there. Pumpkin and spice cakes are very good in the fall.

Bellamy's mom used to make this pistachio-cardamom cake when he was younger and it's his absolute favorite. He's made it a couple of times since she passed, but it's not quite as good when he does it.

Holly likes really simple, not overly sweet flavors tbh? Like vanilla is one of her favorite flavors. She loves a good lemon cake the most.

Roxy is like a triple chocolate cake kind of person. Like her sweet tooth is insatiable. The more chocolatey, the better.

Akira is literally so respectful and well-behaved around the fae, but the minute he’s around humans or other creatures, he’s such a shit.

MALEFICENT - What is the cruelest thing your muse has ever done? What is the cruelest thing they’re capable of? ash, kiyoshi, akira

ash brought someone back from the dead. which was not!!! intentionally cruel!!! but he recognizes that it was not an okay thing to do and she was very much not grateful for it and it was one of those hard-learned lessons that has stuck with him for LIFE. so that’s. probably the most cruel. and as for like. how cruel he’s capable of being???? ash is. not? like maybe, maybe under the right circumstances like. if he had kids and needed to protect them. but he is soft and squishy and a marshmallow man and cruelty just. isn’t. him. it was a point of contention for his parents tbqh.

kiyoshi has the odd circumstance of growing up with a human sibling??? which has made him… nicer? to humans? not nice. he’s still very, very fae. and his concepts of kindness and cruelty are so very skewed. but he has a much, much better understanding of how terribly fragile mortals are so he doesn’t have a habit of fucking with them? he would, if one offended him, but he just… doesn’t seek them out most of the time tbh. probably the worst he’s been is to akira. for the most part they get along, but they grew up together which means they’ve had their downs and kiyoshi has been absolutely vicious in some of their arguments. he’s definitely capable of being terribly cruel though. and he’s going to outlive akira and not having that sort of anchor? i think eventually he’ll be just like any other fae. very, very dangerous.

on the flipside, akira has the weird circumstance of growing up with the fae. he’s human but… he’s got a more fae sense of right and wrong. he’s still not cruel!!! he does what he can to help others, especially other humans but he’s been known to help fae, too. but he’s dangerous. he’s learned the ways he can defend himself and the tricks he can use to survive and he knows damn well that he can’t hold back or he won’t keep surviving. akira would kill, if need be. to protect himself or someone else. it wouldn’t be slow or harsh, but he would still do it. he would kill to keep himself safe, to keep kiyoshi safe, and to protect innocent people.

Akira has some degree of protection thanks to his mom and Kiyoshi, so there aren’t many fae who’d be outright willing to kill him, but he’s made a fair share of enemies through his habit of helping humans and some of those enemies have absolutely done harm to him over it. Despite those, “lessons,” he hasn’t stopped doing what he can to help humans, especially the ones who don’t know what they’re getting into.

Time works differently in the fae realm, so Akira is likely much older than he looks. He’s still mentally/physically 24 but he was likely a child/preteen/teen for much longer than the average human. And because Kiyoshi grew up along side him, it’s true for him as well. Had he grown up in the mortal world, as changelings are intended, he would have aged at a human rate.

Part 1 of 3 so I can break it up by muse. Starting with Akira & Kiyoshi, bc they’re a packaged deal.

2. What is/was your character’s relationship with their mother like?

Complicated. For Akira and Kiyoshi both. For Akira, technically she’s his kidnapper, but she’s always been more of a mother to him than anything else and he knows that, maybe her original intentions weren’t good, but that she didn’t have to take him. She could have left him behind, but something in her decided that his birth parents weren’t fit to raise children at all and she took him. For Kiyoshi, it’s stifling sometimes. She is his mother, but she wasn’t supposed to be the one to raise him. He wasn’t supposed to grow up here. He was meant to live in the mortal world, but he didn’t. He’s glad that she didn’t leave him, but it feels wrong, most of the time, for him to be here.

5. On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?

Akira keeps a large number of anti-fae charms on his person at all times. Anything that puts him on equal grounds with the creatures around him. St. John’s Wort. Mountain Ash berries. Salt. He keeps a couple of iron rings in his pockets, just in case. Kiyoshi isn’t nearly as weaponized as his brother. He has magic of his own and relies on that when needed. He does, however, usually have something sweet on him. Sometimes offerings from mortals, sometimes fae food. Depends on the day. If Kiyoshi had grown up on the mortal side, he would definitely be the type to keep hard candy in his pockets like your local grandma.

12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?

Ahahahahaha. Okay here’s the thing. Akira is always calm bc it keeps him alive and Kiyoshi is rarely calm bc he’s a mess. I think Akira experienced a very comforting calm when he started learning to sword fight. He’s very good at it and it was one of the first moments where he didn’t feel completely defenseless. I think Kiyoshi had a similar experience when his magic started manifesting and he figured out how to use it? Neither of them are the types of people who like feeling like they can’t take care of themselves.

Akira spends a fair amount of his time doing what he can to protect humans who end up in the fae realm. Not all of them accept his help, but a lot of them didn’t fully understand what they were getting into when they came here and he does what he can to level the playing field for them.
