ive always thought it was the other way around, bc it started as an accessibility thing, the number in parentheses being the one written for the purpose of accessibility. and imo most people dont write out numbers as a full word most of the time, theyd write it as a numeral. so to me it makes more sense that the one in parentheses would be the one written out

oh!! i was introduced to it years ago as “word (numeral)” but the context was also slightly different and based on a video game? so maybe the ‘joke’ was how if you have duplicates of the same item in a game inventory it’s listed as “item name (numeral)” and really until today i actually. assumed that was just Correct and and hadn’t thought about it much beyond that

the accessibility thing makes sense tho! i haven’t seen it written as “numeral (word)” at all until that meme got popular but ofc i’m just one perspective so it’s entirely possible i’ve just missed it the entire time

EITHER WAY an accessibility explanation is even better than “states vs everywhere else” aka my dumb joke compromise, so im sorry for being rude about whats possibly a completely important useful thing
