Kurt Braunohler -- August 4, 2015

Kurt was incredible.  In a room that was described both as ‘the kill room from True Detective’ (courtesy of killer hometown opener, Allan Ivie) and as ‘your Mom and Dad’s dungeon in the seventies’ (by our headliner himself) a newcomer like myself might think that comedy would be hard to come by.  Boy, was I wrong.

After a meandering skit by the hosts and an awesome set by the aforementioned Allan Ivie (that included two, no three!, math jokes) Kurt took what all the chairs were pointed towards.  Feeding off the excited crowd, Kurt started to make jokes about the city, his hotel, and how he would use the lighting on the stage to get deep and dark only to remind us that its just him, guys!  With the relatable stuff really capturing the audience, Lexington was in the palm of his hand the rest of the night.  

The set was solid and he bounced between storytelling material about his life as a newlywed to the absolute absurd.  It was magical.  I don’t want to tell tales out of school, but I think it was going so well that Kurt threw in some extra material just to keep it rolling a little longer.  Near the end he told the story of his first bar fight as seen on This Is Not Happening.  He rounded it out with some political commentary (no punchline) and brought the house down with an utterly ridiculous joke he prefaced with ‘people usually don’t like this one’.  This was sent out to the audience as a challenge to laugh their hardest.  All you need to know is that Kurt impersonates a beaver for 3-5 minutes and that bit had better be on his next special.
