قيل للحسن البصري رحمه الله: فلان يحفظ القراَن. فقال: بل القراَن يحفظه! It was said to al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, 'Fulan (such and such person) Yahfadhu -is memorising/memorises- the Qur'an.' He replied, 'Rather, the Qur'an Yahfadh-hu -is preserving/ preserves- him.' (The Arabic word 'Hifdh' is used to mean both memorisation and preservation of something/to keep something or someone safe.)
Al-Hasan Al Basri (Allāh have mercy on him) said: “Verily, Allah lets [a person] enjoy a blessing for as long as he wills. But when He is no longer thanked for it, He turns it into a punishment.”
— [Reported by Ibn Ab Al-Dunya, Kitab Al-Shukr art.17]
Al-Hasan al-Basri (Allāh have mercy on him) said:
“Do not sit with the people of innovation. Do not debate with them or listen to them.”
— (Ad-Darimi, 1/121)
“Son of Adam! You are nothing but a number of days. With each passing day a part of you has also gone.”
Hassan al-Basri (رحمه الله)
