Acting Upon What We Learn

To Us It Is Only A "Sunnah", To Him It Was A Manhaj

2. From the benefits (of this report): is knowing how devout Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) was in his following of the Prophet ﷺ. 2 - (ومنها): ما كان عليه ابن عمر رضي الله تعالى عنهما من شدة الاتباع للنبيّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، He (may Allah be pleased with him) was maʿrūf (ie: well known) for that. فكان معروفًا بذلك، ʿAbd Allah b. Wahb narrated from Mālik, from someone who told him that Ibn ʿUmar used to follow the order of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, trace his footsteps and show great concern for emulating his composure, so much so that some were concerned for his sanity because of his level of involvement in that. فروى ابن وهب، عن مالك، عمن حدثه أن ابن عمر كان يتبع أمر رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، وآثاره، وحاله، ويهتمّ به، حتى كان قد خيف على عقله من اهتمامه بذلك. Khārijah b. Muṣʿab narrated that Mūsá b. ʿUqbah heard Nāfiʿ saying: “Had you seen how devoutly Ibn ʿUmar used to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ you would have considered him majnūn (ie: insane)!” وعن خارجة بن مصعب، عن موسى بن عقبة، عن نافع، قال: لو نظرت إلى ابن عمر إذا اتبع رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، لقلت: هذا مجنون. On the authority of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar, Nāfiʿ said that Ibn ʿUmar used to trace the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, going to every place he prayed. وعن عبد الله بن عمر، عن نافع، أن ابن عمر كان يتّبع آثار رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كلّ مكان صلّى فيه، The place where the Prophet ﷺ took rest under a tree once, was a place Ibn ʿUmar used to maintain later on, watering the tree so it would not dry up. حتى إن النبيّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- نزل تحت شجرة، فكان ابن عمر يتعاهد تلك الشجرة، فيصبّ في أصلها الماء؛ لكيلا تيبس. Nāfiʿ said that after Ibn ʿUmar narrated the ḥadīth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ requesting a certain door to be left for the women to use, Ibn ʿUmar refrained from using the door until he died. وقال نافع، عن ابن عمر، قال: قال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: "لو تركنا هذا الباب للنساء"، قال نافع: فلم يدخل منه ابن عمر حتى مات. Abū Ḥafṣ al-Abār reported that his father said: أنا أبو القاسم عبد الرحمن بن الحسن بن محمد الفارسي قراءة عليه بميهنة سنة ثمان وسبعين وأربعمائة أنا أبو الغنائم محمد بن محمد بن الفراء المقرئ البصري بالمسجد الأقصى أنا أبو الحسن علي بن عبد الله بن الحسن بن جهضم بن سعيد بمكه قال وفيما قرئ على أبي محمد جعفر بن نصير بن القاسم حدثكم أحمد بن مسروق نا عبد الله بن محمد عن أبي حفص الأبار عن أبيه قال I was in need of something and Ibn Shubrumah did a favour for me so I went to thank him. كان لي عند ابن شبرمة حاجه فقضاها فأتيته أشكره So he asked me, “What are you thanking me for?” فقال على أي شئ تشكرني So I replied, “For helping me out in a time of need.” قلت قضيت لي حاجة So he said, “Leave. Words Imam Ahmad Needed to Hear During a Time of Distress

Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī said: Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh said: (Imām) Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: When this affair (ie: during the trial of whether the Qurʾān was created), there was nothing that was stronger to me than the statement of a bedouin that I heard when we were in chains. أَحْمَدُ بنُ أَبِي الحَوَارِيِّ: حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيْمُ بنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بنُ حَنْبَلٍ: مَا سَمِعْتُ كَلِمَةً مُنْذُ وَقعتُ فِي هَذَا الأَمْرِ أَقوَى مِنْ كَلِمَةِ أَعْرَابِيٍّ كَلَّمنِي بِهَا فِي رَحبَةِ طَوقٍ. He said to me: “O Aḥmad if you die (ie: are killed) on the basis of the ḥaq, then you die as a martyr. And if you live, then you live being praiseworthy.” قَالَ: يَا أَحْمَدُ، إِنْ يَقتلْكَ الحَقُّ مُتَّ شَهِيداً، وَإِنْ عِشتَ عِشتَ حَمِيداً. So my heart then received firm resolve. فَقَوَّى قَلْبِي.
