al-Imām Aḥmad reported: Yazīd narrated to us; Abū al-Ashhab narrated to us; Saʿīd b. Ayman, the freedman of Kaʿb b. Sawwār, narrated to me; he said: “While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking to his Companions, a man from the poor came and sat beside a man from the wealthy, and the latter seemed to draw his clothes away from him.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed [in expression] and said: “Did you fear, O so-and-so, that your wealth would pass contagiously to him, or that his poverty would pass contagiously to you?”
He said: “O Messenger of Allah, and is there any evil in wealth?”
He said: “Yes; your wealth calls you to the Fire, and his poverty calls him to al-Jannah (ie: Paradise).”
He said: “Then what will save me from it?”
He said: “That you support him.”
He said: “Then I will do so.”
The other said: “I have no desire in him.”
He said: “Then seek forgiveness and supplicate for your brother.”
