An Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham soldier recorded himself hanging out with the Turkish Armed Forces in Idlib, Syria

Tahrir al-Sham is the most recent form of Al Qaeda in the levant, which was previously known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (Front for the Conquest of the Levant) and Jabhat al-Nusra (Victory Front, full name: Victory Front for the People of the Levant by the Mujahideen of the Levant on the Fields of Jihad) before that.

al-Nusra shared the same ideology of and was founded by ISIS (when it was Al Qaeda in Iraq) to coopt the revolution in Syria yet split with ISIS following Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s announcement of independence from al Qaeda and the establishment of the Islamic caliphate in April, 2013. This included AQI’s possessions in Syria, which was al-Nusra. The leader of al-nusra, Abu Muhammad al-Julani refused to break ties with al Qaeda and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the global leader of Al Qaeda, officially affirmed al-Nusra as a member of the global al Qaeda network.

Today, Abu Muhammad al-Julani is the leader of HTS, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. Turkey, a NATO member, has cordial relations with HTS and by extension, al Qaeda in Syria.
